July is Martha's Vineyard at its busiest and its most demanding. Days average 79–81°F, the ocean warms up enough to swim, and the calendar is packed, starting with the Edgartown Fourth of July parade. It takes planning: ferry reservations sell out in February, rentals book a year ahead, and Five Corners traffic can stand still.

Daily highs average 79–81°F and lows settle around 61–65°F. It rarely gets above 85°F, and the nights are cool enough for a light fleece. The ocean water temperature averages about 71–73°F on the Sound side in July, warming through the month. Sound-side beaches (State Beach, Menemsha, Lambert's Cove) warm faster than Atlantic-facing beaches.
There isn't much rain: 2.5–3.1 inches across 6–9 days, mostly brief afternoon thunderstorms. A persistent southwest sea breeze keeps the island cooler than the mainland. Morning fog is normal and usually burns off by 10 AM; up-island tends to be foggier than down-island.
For packing, you'll want light daywear, 2+ swimsuits, a light fleece for evenings (temps drop to the low 60s), a packable rain jacket, walking shoes, high-SPF sunscreen and a hat. One resort-casual outfit covers dinners out; the dress code is relaxed everywhere on the Vineyard.

The Edgartown Fourth of July Parade dates to 1844. It steps off at 5:00 PM sharp down Main Street: floats, marching bands, antique cars, fire trucks. Crowds stand 10+ deep, so an hour early is about right. The Park and Ride lot near the Triangle beats driving into Edgartown on July 4th.

Fireworks launch from a barge in Edgartown Harbor at ~9:00 PM. Lighthouse Beach, Fuller Street and Memorial Wharf have the best views. This is the only July 4th fireworks on Martha's Vineyard; Oak Bluffs usually holds its own fireworks two nights after Illumination Night (the 2026 show was canceled; it returns in 2027). The Edgartown date was confirmed for July 4, 2026.
Also on July 4th: MVCMA Children's Parade in Trinity Park (9–11 AM), Aquinnah Parade (10 AM on Moshup Trail), Ringing of Freedom Bells in Vineyard Haven (2 PM).

The Possible Dreams Auction, the island's big charity auction, was held on Saturday, August 8 in 2026 (later than the July 20 date in 2025) at Allen Farm, Chilmark. Seth Meyers hosted it for the seventh year in a row, and it raises about $500,000 a year.

Parade-day Edgartown, the busiest the island gets all year.
July 4th week is one of the busiest of the summer, and thousands of spectators line the Edgartown parade route. The island's roughly 20,000 year-round population swells to as many as 95,000 on a peak summer day, by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission's 2024 estimate.
SSA ferry vehicle reservations for summer 2026 opened February 3 at 8 AM. Opening day brought 23,014 car bookings worth nearly $7.3 million (23,069 in 2025), and many peak weekends were soon at or near capacity. If you missed it, the computerized wait list works, since cancellations are common. Walk-ons need no reservation; on holidays, come 30+ minutes early.
Rental houses for prime July weeks book 6–12 months ahead. By March the best ones are gone, although the 2025 market softened: about 4,000 registered short-term rentals (3,999 in 2022, by the MV Commission's housing report) created unusual late availability.
Restaurant reservations open about 29–30 days ahead. State Road and Bettini use Resy; Ocean Club uses OpenTable.
Calm Nantucket Sound water and a gradual slope suit young children on this free, 2-mile stretch along Beach Road, with the bike path alongside and the "Jaws Bridge" on the way. Weekend parking is gone by 10 AM, so biking is easier. Very busy in July.
A long stretch of Atlantic beach, powerful waves, free parking. Rip currents are a real hazard, with rescues every summer, so it suits strong swimmers more than young children. A flat 3-mile ride from Edgartown; lifeguards on duty.

West-facing, with a clear view of the sunset; the crowd applauds when the sun drops. Calm and family-friendly, if rocky in spots. Lobster from Larsen's Temporarily closed Closed for the season until May 2027, per its own site on the sand is the classic dinner. Parking is tight, so come 2 hours before sunset or take VTA bus #12. Chilmark is dry, so it's BYOB.
Chappaquiddick's East Beach stays quiet; you get there on the On-Time ferry. Lake Tashmoo in VH is a quiet local spot with warm pond swimming. Lobsterville Beach in Aquinnah, two quiet miles on Vineyard Sound. Its small parking area is for Aquinnah residents only.
Martha's Vineyard is one of the more expensive U.S. vacation spots in peak season.
Tuesday through Thursday are noticeably quieter. Saturday is the busiest day, because most weekly rentals turn over then and the ferries and roads fill up.
Up-island is calmer. Chilmark, West Tisbury and Aquinnah are much quieter, and Alley's General Store, Polly Hill Arboretum and Cedar Tree Neck are rarely crowded.
The free VTA buses save you the driving and parking. Bike paths connect all down-island towns.
The Farmers Market is quieter on Wednesdays than on Saturdays.
On July 4th, State Beach is a calmer fireworks spot than Edgartown harbor, the VTA gets you to the parade, and the morning is nice up-island. Live lobsters and steamers from The Net Result make a DIY clambake.
Sunset lobster at Menemsha: it's worth pre-ordering from Larsen's. Grace Episcopal Church Friday lobster rolls in VH (Friday nights, mid-May to Labor Day). Back Door Donuts Temporarily closed Closed for the 2026 season; back in 2027, per its own site in OB: it's worth getting there by 6:45 PM.

The Hamptons or Martha's Vineyard? Newport or Martha's Vineyard? A drivable Gilded Age city with the Breakers ($32), the free 3.5-mile Cliff Walk, festival weekends at Fort Adams and a late harbor front, against a six-town island reached by an $11 ferry with twenty beaches, a free bus and quiet nights. Getting there, sights, beds, nights, children, weddings, and doing both from Rhode Island.
Block Island vs Martha's Vineyard, honestly: a 9-square-mile island with one village and a $12 year-round ferry from Point Judith against 90 square miles, six towns and an $11 boat from Woods Hole. Size, ferries (the car fare gap is huge), beds, beaches, the week versus the weekend, and which one fits your trip from Rhode Island.
