Essential Vendors

Planners

A local planner is essential — island logistics, noise curfews, and ferry coordination demand expertise. KG Events & Design (luxury tier), Plan It Martha's Vineyard (deep local knowledge), Timeless Event Planning (20+ years). Day-of: $1,500–3,500. Full-service: $6,000–15,000+.

Caterers

V. Jaime Hamlin & Sons — 45+ years, served presidents. Buckley's Gourmet — 25+ years, raw bar boat. Bill Smith's Clambake Co. — 50+ years, up to 200 guests. Seated dinner: $125–200/person, luxury to $300+.

Florists, Music, Cake

Fire Cat Farm (on-island seasonal blooms), Morning Glory Farm ($5,000 minimum), Donaroma's (40+ years). Flowers: $4,000–6,000+. Music: Mike Benjamin & the Keepers (performed for Obama, Hanks), DJ Smooth B (20+ years). Cake: Cakes by Liz. Late-night: Back Door Donuts apple fritters.

The 10 PM Rule

Every town enforces noise ordinances requiring outdoor music to end by 9 or 10 PM.Edgartown/WT/Chilmark: 10 PM. Oak Bluffs: 11 PM. Some venues earlier. Workarounds: silent disco (wireless headphones), relocate to a downtown bar, or move indoors.

Beach Weddings — Beautiful but Difficult

South Beach prohibits wedding setups, tents, amplified music. Most public beaches ban structures. Most couples choose ocean-VIEW venues (Winnetu lawn, Harbor View gazebo, Allen Farm cliffs) rather than actual sand. Lobsterville Beach (Aquinnah) is open to all and has hosted real weddings — permits at town level.

Getting Everyone There

SSA ferry: walk-on $11 one-way, no reservation needed. Cars $73.50+ and sell out fast. Most planners recommend guests leave cars on mainland. Island Queen from Falmouth: $20, 35 min. Cape Air from Boston: 40 min, ~$159. On-island: MV Sightseeing trolleys $475–575 for wedding transfers. All ferry options.

Marriage License

Massachusetts: no residency required. Both partners appear at any town clerk with ID. $50 fee, 3-day waiting period (waivable by court). Valid 60 days. MA does not recognize online ordinations — friend officiants need a One-Day Marriage Designation (apply 6+ weeks ahead).

Best Months

  • September — Hottest wedding month. 74°F, fewer crowds, softer light, better availability. Sunset ~6:50–7:15 PM
  • July–August — Best weather but 20–40% cost premium, packed ferries
  • June — Long daylight (sunset 8:25 PM), milder temps
  • May/October — True value months, gorgeous weather, some seasonal businesses may be closed

Most Photographed Spots

Menemsha Harbor at sunset, Gay Head Cliffs, MVCMA gingerbread cottages, Edgartown Lighthouse, and Chappaquiddick (remote, romantic, tiny ferry).

📅 Island Tip of the Day — Seasonal

Memorial Day weekend marks the official season start — busy but noticeably less intense than July/August. The week after is even quieter and everything's open.
