Lucy Vincent Beach on Martha's Vineyard: Clay Cliffs, Surf, and How Access Works

Lucy Vincent Beach in Chilmark on Martha's Vineyard is the island's most dramatic beach: towering clay cliffs behind you, some of the best surf on the island in front, and a clothing-optional section at the far end. It's also one of the hardest beaches to get onto in summer. This guide covers what's here and exactly how access works.

Clay cliffs, a sea stack standing off the sand and west-facing light all afternoon. Chilmark keeps this one for residents in summer, and you can see why.

Why Visit Lucy Vincent Beach?

04 REASONS
THE SCENERYLedges that move

Coastal erosion keeps carving the sand and gravel into ledges and shelves that shift from year to year, all backed by the clay cliffs. No two seasons look quite the same.

SUNRISEThe photographers’ hour

Low morning light on the cliffs, long shadows across the sand formations. If you shoot, set the alarm.

TRADITIONA clothing-optional section

Part of the beach is clothing-optional, going back to its early days before it became a public space. Long-standing and well known, not a secret.

THE SURFA real break

Some of the best waves on the island break here, and surfers from across it treat the beach accordingly.

Access Guide (Updated for 2026)

Know Before You Go

Getting on the sand

SUMMER

Roughly June 1 to September 15 the beach is open only to Chilmark residents, property owners and their guests.

STICKER

A vehicle beach pass must be displayed on the passenger-side rear window. A valid lease or proof of ownership is required to get one.

ON FOOT

Walk-on passes are available for visitors arriving on foot, by bicycle or by motorcycle.

OFF-SEASON

Roughly September 16 to May 31 the beach is open to everyone, with no pass and no fee. This is the window for non-residents.

ENFORCEMENT

The summer restriction is enforced. Dates shift from year to year, so confirm with Chilmark Town Hall before you drive up-island.

Walking it end to end is the standard first visit: cliffs, formations and the whole layout in one pass.

LIGHTPhotography

The cliff formations photograph best at sunrise and sunset.

STAY A WHILEPicnicking

Facilities are minimal and the crowds stay thin, so bring a picnic and settle in.

Questions

Questions about Lucy Vincent

Is Lucy Vincent Beach clothing-optional?

Yes, in part. The clothing-optional area is at the far end of the beach, a tradition dating back to its early days, while the main section stays family-friendly.

Can non-residents visit?

Usually only during the off-season, roughly September 16 to May 31. In summer, access requires a Chilmark-issued pass linked to residency, property ownership or tenancy.

What makes it different from other island beaches?

The combination: clay cliffs, real surf, sand formations that reshape every year, and the clothing-optional tradition. No other beach here has all four, and the summer limits keep it far less crowded.

When is the best time for photography?

Sunrise. Low morning light hits the clay cliffs directly and throws long shadows across the sand formations.
