Martha’s Vineyard in Winter, Town by Town

What each town looks like once the summer is over: our own photographs, from February snow to a Christmas Day beach, with what stays open and how to get here.

The island does not close in winter; it thins out. The ferry to Vineyard Haven runs every day of the year, the buses keep their off-season timetable, and a core of year-round restaurants, the museum, the film center and the bookstore keep their doors open. Snowfall averages about 25 inches a season, usually in a few storms between December and March, and the towns plow fast. These are the winters we have photographed, town by town.

The ferry town

Vineyard Haven: the boats keep coming

The Steamship Authority lands here all year, so Vineyard Haven stays the busiest town in winter. The Black Dog Tavern on the waterfront opens daily from 7, and the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, the Film Center and Bunch of Grapes keep winter hours. First Friday holds its last 2026 evening on December 4. When it snows, the town plows Main Street before most people are up.

The summer town in its quiet months

Oak Bluffs: Circuit Avenue with room to park

Circuit Avenue in December is a different street: parking where you like, Offshore Ale and Sharky’s open, the Flying Horses shut for the season after their last October weekend. Light Up Oak Bluffs falls on Saturday, December 5 this year. The Campground cottages sit under snow with nobody on the porches, and on Christmas Day a few storefronts carry painted windows while almost everything else closes.

The biggest winter weekend

Edgartown: lights on the wharf, snow on North Water Street

Edgartown gets the island’s biggest winter weekend: Christmas in Edgartown, December 10 to 13, with the lighthouse lighting at Memorial Wharf on Friday evening and the parade down Main Street on Saturday. The Newes and Rockfish stay open most of the winter; Atria Temporarily closed Closed for the season until May 2027, per its own site closes. In February the captains’ houses stand in snow and the harbor goes to the scallopers.

The long beach, empty

Katama and South Beach: the whole shore to yourself

South Beach in winter is a long walk with nobody on it. The Right Fork path runs between snow-covered sand fences, the dune grass keeps its colour long after the leaves go, and the road between the forks is plowed but quiet. Bring the wind layer; there is nothing between you and the Atlantic.

Across the harbor

Chappaquiddick: the little ferry keeps running

The Chappy Ferry runs its winter schedule from October 18 to May 26: 6:30 in the morning to 10 at night, with one last round at 11. Mytoi, the Japanese garden, is free from November to April, and the beaches that fill with trucks in summer are footprints and gulls.

Between the two towns

The Beach Road: State Beach and the bridge

Joseph Sylvia State Beach runs for two miles between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, and from October 1 to March 31 dogs are allowed on it, which is when half the island walks it. The groins, the dunes and the Jaws Bridge are empty, and on a still Christmas Day the water barely moves.

West Tisbury, Chilmark, Aquinnah

Up-island: the quiet end of the island

West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah go properly quiet. Polly Hill Arboretum charges $5 from November to April and the grounds stay open sunrise to sunset. Conroy Apothecary in West Tisbury keeps the up-island year-rounders supplied. The Gay Head Light watches the winter sun go down over the Sound with nobody at the overlook, and after a snowfall the red clay of the cliffs shows through the white.
