Martha's Vineyard has five golf courses, from semi-private clubs that welcome visitors to members-only spots where you'll need an invitation. Most are nine-hole courses, and none of them are boring. Here's what each one offers and how to get a round in.

Farm Neck in Oak Bluffs is the island’s best-known course, a semi-private layout along the water where more than one president has played. Book well ahead in summer.
Located in Oak Bluffs, Farm Neck Golf Club is a semi-private course that winds through woodland, open meadow, and marsh, with water views on several holes. It has a long list of well-known regulars, including former President Barack Obama. The club also runs a public restaurant and hosts events through the summer.
Just outside Edgartown, the Vineyard Golf Club is one of the newest and most exclusive courses on the island. Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie designed the original 2002 course; Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner later extensively redesigned the 18 holes, and the grounds are maintained organically. It's one of the few organic golf courses in the United States. The clubhouse hosts a steady run of events. You need a membership to play, which limits access but keeps the course quiet and in excellent shape.

Established in 1926, the Edgartown Golf Club is a classic nine-hole course with views across Vineyard Sound. The club is private, members and their guests only, stays open year-round when the weather allows, and runs a junior golf program in the summer. It suits a quiet, unhurried round.
Mink Meadows sits out toward West Chop, a nine-hole course with Sound views and an easygoing, old-island feel.
Located in Vineyard Haven, Mink Meadows Golf Club is a semi-private nine-hole course with a mix of harder and easier holes, so it works for beginners and long-time players alike. The club follows environmentally friendly maintenance practices and hosts events and tournaments, including a weekly Ladies’ Day.
For something different, the Royal and Ancient Chappaquiddick Links, established in 1887, is a nine-hole course on Chappaquiddick Island. You get there by riding the Chappy Ferry from Edgartown, which turns the round into a small expedition. The course is semi-private and a good bet if you want a slow game with nobody pushing from behind.
Golf is a legitimate reason to come to Martha's Vineyard, not just something to fill an afternoon. Check access before you plan a round (two of the clubs are members-only) and book early in summer.
