Nobody needs a car to see Martha’s Vineyard: the VTA reaches every town, the big beaches, the airport and the Gay Head Cliffs, and this season every ride is free. Pick where you are starting from below and we will hand you the exact bus, the exact minute it leaves and the one warning that matters for getting home. Every time on this page comes straight from the VTA’s 2026 timetables, the same ones we keep current in our full VTA guide.

Fare-free through September 2026

Every VTA bus on this page is free to ride this season. Track any bus live at vta.mytransitride.com or call 508-693-9440 (ext. 2).

The VTA cancelled the late "extended evening" trips on Routes 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 11 for all of 2026 (Route 6 still runs late). Printed brochures and the big route map still show them. Trust the individual timetables and the live tracker. Contract talks with drivers are ongoing, so re-check service close to your trip.

Good to know before you board

Flag stops. Outside the no-stop zones, VTA drivers will pick you up or drop you off anywhere it is safe. Just wave. In downtown Edgartown and parts of Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs, use posted stops only.
How to ask for your stop. Island buses signal stops the old-fashioned way: pull the cord that runs along the windows, or on newer buses press a button on the handrail. The driver pulls over at the next safe spot. Pair that with the flag-stop rule and almost anywhere along a route is your stop.
Routes overlap. Use it. The route number on the front is not the only way to your destination: Route 13 also stops at the hospital and State Beach on its run, and Routes 1 and 13 both connect Vineyard Haven and Edgartown. If a bus passes where you are going, ride it and ring for the stop.
Bikes ride free. Every bus carries a front rack that takes two to three bikes depending on the bus, first come, first served. If the rack is full, the bike waits for the next one, no exceptions.
Schedules step down after summer. The high-summer timetable ends August 22; a leaner late-season schedule runs August 23 to October 3, then the fall book takes over. The routes stay the same, the minutes move. Check the live tracker before an evening ride.
Chilmark sunset bus. June 19 to August 30, Route 12 shuttles between the Tabor House Road lot and Menemsha. The last bus leaves Menemsha Beach 30 minutes after sunset.
Chappaquiddick. No bus goes there. From Church Street it is a short walk down to Dock Street for the Chappy Ferry, which shuttles continuously in season.
