Martha's Vineyard in October: Fall Foliage, the Derby & Off-Season Travel (2026)

Martha's Vineyard in October: Fall Foliage, the Derby & Off-Season Travel (2026)

Martha's Vineyard in October: fall foliage timing, the 81st Striped Bass Derby, 30+ open restaurants, hotel deals at 40-60% off, and why October is ideal.

October is Martha's Vineyard's best-kept secret. Summer crowds vanish, hotel rates drop 40–60%, and the island reveals a quieter, more authentic side. Daytime temps in the low-to-mid 60s, the 81st annual Derby in full swing, fall foliage peaking, and beaches that were resident-only all summer are open to everyone. Here's your complete October guide.

Why October Is the Smartest Time to Visit

  • Crowds: Summer population 100,000+ drops to ~17,000 year-round residents. Empty roads, walk-in restaurant tables, easy ferry reservations
  • Weather: Average highs 64°F, lows 48°F. ~7 hours sunshine/day. Ocean temp 61°F early month
  • Savings: Hotels 40–60% below peak. Ashley Inn from $125/night. Winnetu offers 35% off suites. No weekend ferry surcharge (saves $82 RT vs summer)
  • Beaches:Lucy Vincent and Lambert's Cove — restricted all summer — open to everyone after Labor Day

Fall Foliage on the Vineyard

Not Vermont, but uniquely beautiful — ocean backdrop with concentrated bursts of color. Peak: late October through early November (2–3 weeks later than mainland MA due to ocean warmth).

What to Look For

  • Beetlebung trees (tupelo) — deep scarlet, first to change (early-mid October). Some trees 650+ years old. Best at Beetlebung Corner, Chilmark
  • Red maples — vivid red/orange/yellow in wetlands. Best along Middle Road, Chilmark
  • Sassafras — speckled yellow/orange, everywhere on island
  • Sumac — deep crimson along roadsides. Striking along Old County Road near Nat's Farm
  • Note: Sugar maples are NOT native to MV. White oaks (70% of canopy) turn brown/russet

7 Best Foliage Spots

  1. Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary (West Tisbury) — Beetlebung scarlet framing ocean views. Free
  2. Polly Hill Arboretum (809 State Rd, WT) — 70 acres of diverse cultivated species. $5 admission
  3. Menemsha Hills — Atlantic panorama from Prospect Hill framed by fall forest
  4. Mytoi Japanese Garden (Chappaquiddick) — Japanese maples + native species reflected in ponds. $5
  5. Middle Road, Chilmark — Premier scenic drive for red maples, stone walls, farms
  6. Felix Neck (Edgartown) — Fall color reflected in salt marsh + peak fall bird migration
  7. Correllus State Forest — 5,000 acres of trails through oak/pitch pine. Subtle but immersive

Getting Here in October

SSA ferry year-round to Vineyard Haven. Oak Bluffs service ends ~Oct 22. Car reservations much easier than summer. All ferry options.

VTA bus full service through ~Oct 3, then reduced schedule. A car is more useful in October — much less traffic than summer, easy parking, ferry without summer weekend surcharge. Car-free guide.

What to Pack

Layers: mornings 48°F, afternoons 64°F, drops fast at sunset (6:25 PM early Oct → 5:42 PM late Oct). Waterproof jacket essential. Fleece/sweater, warm hat, sturdy hiking shoes, sunscreen. "Locals say no matter when you visit, you'll want a sweatshirt the moment the sun goes down."

Photography Tips

October light is softer and lower-angled — ideal. Aquinnah Cliffs for sunset (year-round ocean sunset). Edgartown Lighthouse for sunrise. Menemsha no longer offers true sun-over-water sunset after early September — head to Aquinnah or West Chop instead. Mytoi ponds for reflected foliage. Cedar Tree Neck for beetlebung + ocean compositions.

For accommodation: where to stay. For dining: restaurant guide. For the full off-season guide.

⛴️ Island Tip of the Day — Ferry

Seastreak from New Bedford ($49 one-way, 50 min) completely bypasses Cape Cod bridge traffic — ideal for summer weekends when the Bourne and Sagamore bridges are jammed.
