Where to shop on Martha's Vineyard, town by town: Bunch of Grapes, the Black Dog story, West Tisbury's general store, thrift shops, and no mall anywhere.
There's no Target, no Walmart and no mall on Martha's Vineyard, one of New England's last holdouts against chain retail. Most shops are locally owned, many by the same family for generations. The shopping runs from the Black Dog t-shirt to hand-blown glass pumpkins from a West Tisbury barn studio, and each town has its own shopping district.

Vineyard Haven is the island's most dependable shopping town: as the year-round ferry port, it has many shops that stay open 12 months. Main Street runs uphill from the harbor.

Founded in 1966 by Cheryl Barbara Stark and voted "Best Jeweler" on the island many times since. Collections include Vineyard Charms, Nautical, Seaglass, Jaws 50th Anniversary collection. LeRoux at Home (62 Main St) has 3 floors of kitchen and home goods, year-round; LeRoux started on the island in 1980. Rainy Day (66 Main St) sells gifts, jewelry and home goods, year-round. Lennox and Harvey is a design-forward general store opened in 2017 by Mark Chung and Eric Coles, and featured in the NYT. The Seven Sisters was named Boston Magazine "Best of Boston." The Green Room has sold surf, skate and sportswear since 1994, and Louisa Gould Gallery shows fine art.
Second Nature at Eden (427 State Road): the old Eden garden center, bought from Donaroma's in 2024 and reopened in spring 2025 by landscape designer Renée Clermont. Native and pollinator plants outside; inside, a shop in the shed they call the She Shed, with faux flowers, vases, antiques and seeds. Seasonal: the nursery closes for the winter after mid-October.
The She Shed at Second Nature at Eden: baskets in the rafters, sunflowers and the first small pumpkins of the autumn stock. Local honey, seeds and work by island artists fill the shelves too.
Quitsa Kitchen (455 State Rd): the bakery cafe doubles as a small island shop, with its own canvas totes, Martha’s Vineyard cutting boards, hoodies and tees, snacks for the beach and bags of Mud coffee on the shelves by the counter.
The other half of Quitsa Kitchen is a shop: canvas totes at $30, island cutting boards, chips and crackers for the beach, hoodies and tees, and a shelf of Mud coffee beans, all on grey shelves against the flowered wallpaper.
Miio (30 Main St) sells only things made in Italy: its sign promises curated Italian fashion, handbags, jewelry, home goods and gifts.

Two names you may remember have closed: Midnight Farm (Carly Simon's boutique, closed 2016 after 20 years) and Bramhall and Dunn (closed 2011).
Circuit Avenue is the island's busiest shopping strip, running a quarter mile from the harbor past the Flying Horses Carousel. It's more casual, more eclectic and generally cheaper than Edgartown.

Out of the center, at the corner of Edgartown–Vineyard Haven Road and County Road, Jardin Mahoney (45 Edgartown–Vineyard Haven Road, 508-693-3511) is the island’s garden center: a greenhouse of houseplants and palms, a nursery yard of trees and shrubs, bagged soil and mulch by the pallet, and a wall of tools that saves a ferry trip when a rake breaks. It carries Mahoney’s own soils and mulches. Open every day, 9 to 4 as of September 2026; jardinmahoneymv.com has the current hours.

Edgartown is the most upscale shopping town, with boutiques, galleries and national brands among the white-columned whaling captains' homes.
Brothers Shep and Ian Murray quit their Manhattan jobs the same day in 1998, sold 800 ties from a backpack in one MV weekend, and built a national brand from there.
The Vineyard Vines launch tied up on the Edgartown waterfront, a short walk from the North Water Street flagship, with the whale from the tie label on its bow.

Portobello Road is a treasure hunt of a shop, with books, decor, antiques and island curiosities. Katydid (38 Main St) is a women's boutique with MV pajamas. Eisenhauer Gallery shows work by more than 40 artists. Old Sculpin Gallery (58 Dock St) has been the MV Art Association's home since 1954, in an 1840 building that was once a sail loft and a boat builder's shed. Respoke turns designer scarves into espadrilles.
Captain Robert Douglas sketched a building on a napkin in 1969 and opened The Black Dog Tavern on New Year's Day 1971, naming it for his black Lab-Boxer mix. The shirts were already a status symbol when President Bill Clinton’s island visits in 1993, 1994 and 1997 sped the trend up; he was photographed shopping at the Black Dog General Store.
Douglas died on April 23, 2025, at 93. On the island the company runs the Tavern, a new pub on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs, bakery cafés and general stores, and in the online shop tees are mostly around $36, sweatshirts and hoodies about $56–92 and hats mostly $32–40. theblackdog.com
Alley's General Store (State Rd) has been "Dealers in Almost Everything" since 1858, the oldest retail on the island, owned by the Vineyard Trust since 1993. It sells penny candy, clam rakes and peacock feathers, and is open year-round; call (508) 693-0088 for current hours.

The Farmers Market has 40–50+ vendors at the Agricultural Hall, Saturdays (Jun–Oct) and Wednesdays (Jun–Aug), 9 AM–noon. Granary Gallery (636 Old County Rd) is the oldest and largest gallery on the island, in a red barn, with 75+ artists including Benton, Eisenstaedt and Loïs Mailou Jones, year-round. At MV Glassworks (683 State Rd) you can watch glassblowing and buy the glass pumpkins it's known for, year-round.
Salt Rock Chocolate Co. carries on the up-island chocolate-making of Chilmark Chocolates: sisters Sarah and Ali, who first worked at the original shop around 2005, sell their handmade chocolate at the Beetlebung Farm stand (410 Middle Rd) and the West Tisbury Farmers Market. Beetlebung Farm expanded its farmstand in Nov 2024 and bakes bread from freshly milled grain, year-round.

Larsen's Fish Market Temporarily closed Closed for the season until May 2027, per its own site (Menemsha) has served lobster rolls at sunset since 1969, seasonally. At the Aquinnah Cliffs, Wampanoag-owned shops sell wampum jewelry and crafts made by tribal artisans. The cliffs themselves are sacred and protected; taking clay is illegal for visitors. The Aquinnah Shop was bought back into Wampanoag ownership for $2M (2023–24).
The island does a good part of its gift shopping at a handful of fairs, and in 2026 the dates line up like this:
Between the fairs, the year-round shops carry the rest: Vineyard Haven’s Main Street, from Bunch of Grapes to Brickman’s, the Granary Gallery and MV Glassworks up-island, and the farm stands for honey and island-made food. Chicken Alley Thrift Shop (38 Lagoon Pond Rd, VH) has been run by MV Community Services since 1962 and was recently renovated and expanded. It has everything from clothing to furniture, plus a rack of second-hand bikes out front. Year-round; posted hours are Tue 10–7, Wed 10–3, Thu–Fri 10–5, Sat 10–4, closed Sun–Mon, with no on-site parking; the Veterans Memorial Park and Beach Street town lots nearby allow 4 hours. ACT TWO (66 Main St, VH) is a nonprofit that funds the arts. Trader Fred's (249D Edgartown–VH Rd) is a discount warehouse with designer jeans, beach gear and cigars, open seven days a week: Monday–Friday 10 AM–6 PM, Saturday 9 AM–6 PM and Sunday 10 AM–4 PM. The Chilmark Flea Market runs Wednesdays and Saturdays, mid-Jun–early Sep, and has for 50+ years. Summer staff buy their bikes here; our seasonal worker guide explains.
Clothes to Go (Stone Church, 89 William Street, Vineyard Haven) is not a shop but a free clothing ministry: anyone can take what they need, and donations of clean clothing are welcome during its hours, Mondays 3 to 6 PM, Wednesdays and Fridays 10 AM to noon and Saturdays 10 AM to 1 PM.

Generally, yes. Oak Bluffs is more eclectic and more affordable; Edgartown’s shops lean upscale. Vineyard Haven sits between the two and stays open longest into the off-season.
At the Featherstone Holiday Gift Show in Oak Bluffs (November 7 to December 16, noon to 4 PM daily), the Vineyard Artisans’ Thanksgiving festival at the Agricultural Hall (November 27 and 28) and the Christmas in Edgartown fairs on December 12 and 13. Vineyard Haven’s Main Street shops are open all year.
