Planning notes

BOOK AHEAD

Anything with a boat or a guide sells out in July and August: charters, sunset sails and the Jaws tour especially.

DECIDE ON THE DAY

Beaches, trails, towns and lighthouses need no booking. Keep them for whatever the weather turns out to be.

SHOULDER SEASON

May to June and September to October give better weather odds and far fewer people, and most operators still run.

WITHOUT A CAR

The bus reaches every town for $10 a day, and the paved bike paths connect the three down-island centres.
