July and August evenings are the crunch. Niantic Park in Oak Bluffs is walk-up, so the courts fill after dinner and you wait your turn at the fence; the easy window is before nine in the morning, when the courts are dry and empty. Vineyard Haven works the other way: book the Lake Street court before you arrive, because the good hours go early in the week. Bring your own paddles and balls to every town court. Oak Bluffs rents them; nobody else does.
One island note. The pop of a pickleball carries a long way across a quiet neighborhood, and the up-island towns have made it clear they do not want more of it. Play the town courts, keep it civil with the tennis players who share them, and do not set up a net in a rental driveway with the neighbors thirty feet away.

The Edgartown Yacht Club tennis center, the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club and the West Chop Club all have courts for members and their guests, with teaching pros in season, and the Menemsha Inn lists pickleball among the amenities for its own guests. If you are staying somewhere with a court, ask at the desk; if not, the town courts above are the game.
The same towns keep tennis courts, and the rules differ from pickleball in each: Church Street in Vineyard Haven (booked through the town, like Lake Street), Robinson Road in Edgartown (no sign-up), Niantic Park in Oak Bluffs (first come, first served, same fee), the West Tisbury School and the Chilmark Community Center (sign-up in season).
