Getting Sick or Hurt on Martha's Vineyard: Hospital, Urgent Care, Pharmacies and What to Expect (2026)

Sooner or later a visitor asks the question nobody puts in a brochure: what happens if someone gets sick out here? The honest answer has three parts. There is one hospital, and it is a good one, with an emergency department that runs around the clock and a helicopter pad for the cases it cannot handle. There is no CVS, no Walgreens and no 24-hour pharmacy anywhere on the island, and the last Main Street drugstore closed in 2024. And in July and August, when the island's population multiplies, the emergency room fills with sunburn, tick bites and ear infections that belong somewhere else. This guide is the somewhere else: every clinic that will see you the same day, the three pharmacies that remain, what to bring from home, how to get to any of it without a car, and what an American emergency visit costs a traveler from abroad.

An emergency: 911 and the hospital

Call 911 for anything that is a real emergency: chest pain, a head injury, a bad allergic reaction, trouble breathing, a near-drowning. Every town has its own fire and EMS service and the three up-island towns share Tri-Town Ambulance, and they are fast on the paved roads; the exceptions are the far beaches, where a dirt-road drive to Long Point or Wasque adds half an hour, which our beach safety guide explains. Martha's Vineyard Hospital is at 1 Hospital Road in Oak Bluffs, on the hill just past the drawbridge from Vineyard Haven, main number 508-693-0410. It is the only hospital in Dukes County, a 31-bed critical access hospital run by Mass General Brigham, and its emergency department is open every hour of the year. From June to the start of September it runs a Fast Track triage lane inside the department for minor injuries and illness, which is the hospital's own admission that the summer waits are long. Anything the hospital cannot treat, a serious trauma, a stroke, a cardiac case, goes to Boston by helicopter or by ambulance on the ferry; that is routine here, and the hospital is set up for it.

Sick but not an emergency: the same-day options

This is the part that changed most in 2026. Until recently the choice was the emergency room or nothing; now there are four doors, and the right one depends on the day of the week and whether you can wait an hour.

Two things to know before you go. The island clinics hand tick bites to doctors every day and will prescribe the preventive dose if the bite qualifies; read our tick guide so you know what to ask. And the hospital asks visitors to contact their own primary care provider first for anything that is not urgent, which for a visitor usually means a phone call home and then one of the doors above.

Pharmacies: three, and none of them open late

Leslie's, the old Main Street drugstore in Vineyard Haven, closed in September 2024, and the island has not replaced it. There is no chain drugstore of any kind and nothing open past 6:30 pm. Plan around that.

Over-the-counter basics (painkillers, antihistamines, aloe, tick tweezers, seasickness tablets) are at every market and general store, including Cronig's, Alley's and the Chilmark Store, at island prices. For anything prescribed, bring the full trip's supply plus a week, in the original containers, and a photo of the prescription; if it runs out, the Stop and Shop transfer or the virtual visit above is the fastest refill. Getting to any of it without a car

The hospital has its own VTA stop, Beach Road at MV Hospital, on the routes between Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs, and the buses are free through June 2027. Island Health Care and the Edgartown pharmacy sit on the Triangle, served by the Edgartown routes. Martha's Vineyard Medical is on State Road at the Cronig's stop. Conroy is on the State Road bus line up-island. What it costs, and travel insurance

American visitors use their own insurance as at home; Mass General Brigham is in most networks, and the clinics above bill the usual way. Visitors from abroad should know that an American emergency department visit without insurance can run to several thousand dollars before any imaging, and a helicopter to Boston to tens of thousands. Travel insurance that covers medical treatment and evacuation is not optional for an island trip; buy it before you sail, and carry the policy number. The self-pay prices that are published are the useful benchmarks: $130 for a virtual visit, and the clinics will quote a walk-in rate on the phone. The island's own hazards, in one paragraph each

• Ticks. The Vineyard has the highest rate of tick-borne disease in Massachusetts, three tick clinics opened within a year, and the alpha-gal meat allergy has become common. Check every evening, remove with fine tweezers, keep the tick, and read the tick guide before the first walk.
• Water. Rip currents on the south shore, tidal channels at the pond openings, and bacteria closures at the sheltered beaches after rain; the beach safety guide covers the lot, including where the lifeguards are.
• Sun and heat. The beaches have no shade and the wind hides the burn. The hospital's summer Fast Track sees more sunburn and dehydration than anything else. Water, hat, shade, and the aloe is at Conroy's.
• Mopeds and bikes. The island's roads are narrow, sandy at the edges and busy in July, and moped crashes are the reason Oak Bluffs tightened its rental rules for the 2026 season. • Seasickness. Forty-five minutes on the ferry in a chop is enough for some people. Tablets from any market before you board, a seat outside on the lower deck, eyes on the horizon; the ferry guide says which crossings are roughest.
