New Year’s Eve on Martha’s Vineyard is a small-town night on an island that is mostly asleep. There are no fireworks and no big midnight crowd. Instead there’s a $150 dinner over a lit harbor, a two-seating table in Edgartown, a blues band in a dive bar that has been open since 1944, a family First Night at the Playhouse, and a walk home under the lights on North Water Street with nobody else on it. In 2026 the Eve falls on a Thursday and New Year’s Day on a Friday, which makes a three-night weekend of it, and the Sunday boat home, January 3, is the boat the whole island’s holiday crowd takes. Know Before You Go
The lights. Edgartown’s Main and North Water Streets, the Oak Bluffs bandstand and Circuit Avenue, the Vineyard Haven museum on the hill, and the Chappy ferry with a string of bulbs on its wheelhouse. Sunset is about 4:20; by five they are the whole show.
First Night at the Vineyard Playhouse for families, 6 to 8 PM in 2025, or the early seating at Alchemy. The Black Dog Tavern on the Vineyard Haven waterfront stays open all winter and needs no ticket; its holiday hours post in December.

No fireworks display on New Year’s Eve (private fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts) and no Times Square moment at midnight. A walk to the harbor, the lighthouse beam going round, and bed. New Year’s Day is a Friday, and the beach is empty at ten.

New Year’s Day on the island is a day for walking. The beaches that were resident-only all summer, Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket, have nobody at the gate; the seals are hauled out on the Chappy side of Wasque; in an irruption year the snowy owls are on the Katama plains; and the Land Bank trails have the leaves down and the water views open. The Black Dog Tavern, which opened in the first days of 1971, usually keeps its doors open on New Year’s Day; its holiday hours post in December. The Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven is closed on New Year’s Day; from January 2 its Menagerie of Marvels exhibition runs to January 17, 2027 (the museum is closed on Mondays). Almost everything else closes on Christmas Day, including the year-round bars, but New Year’s Day is gentler: the year-round core opens on shortened hours. The Saturday is the last full day of the holiday island, and the Sunday boat, January 3, is the one everyone takes home. Book a Monday sailing instead and you get the island’s emptiest week for the price of one more $200 night.

Know Before You Go
From January 6 the Steamship moves to its 2027 winter timetable, which it publishes in early November (reservations open November 3); in past winters it has stayed at about fourteen crossings a day, Vineyard Haven only, and the boats run half empty. A car is $79 each way through December (the January to March rate was $73.50 in 2026; check the Steamship Authority for 2027), and the slots are easy outside the holiday weekend.

Average high 40, low 26, and about 25 inches of snow across the whole winter, most of it gone in a day or two because the ocean holds the island above freezing more often than the mainland. Nor’easters shut the boat for a day once or twice a winter, so a spare day helps.
The cheapest of the year. The Harbor View has closed for part of January in past winters; the Mansion House with its indoor pool and the Vineyard Haven inns carry the month. A winter house rents by the month for less than one August week.

We would come on the Wednesday or Thursday boat and stay four nights, book the Bettini table or the Alchemy seating the day the menus post in December, and get the Playhouse tickets the same week with children along. The lights look best on Thursday afternoon before dinner; after that comes a midnight walk by the harbor, New Year’s Day on an empty beach, and the museum on Saturday, when it opens again. If you can, stay past the Sunday boat: the first week of January is the island at its emptiest and the rooms are at their cheapest, and the winter guide has that month, and the two after it, closure by closure. Yes, on the Steamship Authority’s winter timetable from Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven, about fourteen crossings a day. The reservation office closes on the holidays themselves, so book a car crossing before you travel. Walk-ons never need a reservation.
A hotel with a restaurant, because the towns close early on a holiday: the Harbor View in Edgartown, across from the lit lighthouse, or the Mansion House in Vineyard Haven with its indoor pool. Rooms run around $200 that cost $600 in August.
The emptiest of the year. Holiday visitors leave on the Sunday boat, some restaurants begin their own vacations, the ferry runs half empty, and the beaches, trails and resident-only shores belong to whoever stayed.

A drivable Gilded Age city with the Breakers ($32), the free 3.5-mile Cliff Walk, festival weekends at Fort Adams and a late harbor front, against a six-town island reached by an $11 ferry with twenty beaches, a free bus and quiet nights. Getting there, sights, beds, nights, children, weddings, and doing both from Rhode Island.
Block Island vs Martha's Vineyard, honestly: a 9.7-square-mile island with one village and a $12 year-round ferry from Point Judith against 96 square miles, six towns and an $11 boat from Woods Hole.
