New Year’s Eve on Martha’s Vineyard is a small-town night on an island that is mostly asleep, and that is the appeal. There is no ball, no fireworks and no crowd; there is a $150 dinner over a lit harbor, a two-seating table in Edgartown, a blues band in a dive bar that has been open since 1944, a family First Night at the Playhouse, and a walk home under the lights on North Water Street with nobody else on it. In 2026 the Eve falls on a Thursday and New Year’s Day on a Friday, which makes a three-night weekend of it, and the Sunday boat home, January 3, is the boat the whole island’s holiday crowd takes. This is how the night works, where the lights are, what is open on the day after, and the January the island turns into the week you leave.
A three-night holiday weekend. Sunset is about 4:15 all month, the average high 46 and low 31, and December is the island’s wettest month; the lights are best seen from a warm car with a coffee.
The 2025 pattern: Bettini at the Harbor View served a New Year’s Eve dinner from 5 to 9 PM at $150, Alchemy in Edgartown ran two seatings, the Ritz in Oak Bluffs and Ocean Club in Vineyard Haven had live music. Expect the same cast in 2026, with tickets on sale in December.
The island’s family-friendly New Year’s Eve in 2025 ran early at the Playhouse in Vineyard Haven and was done by eight, which is the island’s idea of a late night in winter.
The Harbor View in Edgartown and the Mansion House in Vineyard Haven are the two hotels with restaurants, which matters on a holiday when the town closes. Book the three nights; the Sunday boat home is the crowded one.
The Steamship sails on Christmas, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day on its winter timetable, Vineyard Haven only, about fourteen crossings a day. The reservation office closes on the holiday itself, so book the car crossing before you travel.

SIX O’CLOCK
First Night at the Vineyard Playhouse for families, 6 to 8 PM in 2025, or the early seating at Alchemy. The Black Dog Tavern on the Vineyard Haven waterfront is open every day of the winter, holiday or not, and needs no ticket.
EIGHT O’CLOCK

TEN O’CLOCK
The Ritz on Circuit Avenue, a dive bar since 1944 with a band on the night, or Ocean Club in Vineyard Haven for music with a view of the harbor. Last call is 12:30 and the island keeps it.
MIDNIGHT
No fireworks (illegal in Massachusetts) and no ball. A walk to the harbor, the lighthouse beam going round, and bed. New Year’s Day is a Friday, and the beach is empty at ten.

New Year’s Day, and the weekend after
New Year’s Day on the island is a walk. The beaches that were resident-only all summer, Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket, have nobody at the gate; the seals are hauled out on the Chappy side of Wasque; in an irruption year the snowy owls are on the Katama plains; and the Land Bank trails have the leaves down and the water views open. The Black Dog Tavern, which opened its doors on New Year’s Day 1971, marks its anniversary with breakfast as usual, and the Martha’s Vineyard Museum in Vineyard Haven is open with its Menagerie of Marvels exhibition running to January 17, 2027, and the warmest café in town. Almost everything else closes on Christmas Day, including the year-round bars, but New Year’s Day is gentler: the year-round core opens on shortened hours. The Saturday is the last full day of the holiday island, and the Sunday boat, January 3, is the one everyone takes home. Book a Monday sailing instead and you get the island’s emptiest week for the price of one more $200 night.

THE BOAT
The ferry drops to its traditional schedule of fourteen crossings a day, Vineyard Haven only, and runs half empty. A car is $115 each way in winter and the slots are easy outside the holiday weekend.
THE RESTAURANTS
The ones that stayed open through December start their own holidays. From the 2026 pattern: Alchemy in Edgartown closed January 1 to February 11, Rosewater through January 19, Sweet Life in Oak Bluffs for the month; the Black Dog, Offshore Ale, Rockfish, the Newes and State Road stayed open, several on shorter weeks. THE WEATHER
Average high 40, low 26, and about 25 inches of snow across the whole winter, most of it gone in a day or two because the ocean holds the island above freezing more often than the mainland. Nor’easters shut the boat for a day once or twice a winter; build in a spare day.
THE ROOMS
The cheapest of the year. The Harbor View takes a brief January pause; the Mansion House with its indoor pool and the Vineyard Haven inns carry the month. A winter house rents by the month for less than one August week.

Our honest advice
Come on the Wednesday or Thursday boat and stay four nights. Book the Bettini table or the Alchemy seating the day the menus post in December, and the Playhouse tickets the same week if you have children. See the lights on the Thursday afternoon before dinner, walk the harbor at midnight, and spend New Year’s Day on an empty beach and in a warm museum. Then stay past the Sunday boat, because the first week of January is the island at its emptiest and the rooms at their cheapest, and the winter guide has that month, and the two after it, closure by closure. Is anything open on New Year’s Day?
The year-round core on shorter hours: the Black Dog Tavern (which opened on New Year’s Day 1971), Offshore Ale, the Newes, the museum in Vineyard Haven, and every beach and trail. Christmas Day is the one day almost everything closes, including the bars.
Does the ferry run on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day?
Yes, on the Steamship Authority’s winter timetable from Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven, about fourteen crossings a day. The reservation office closes on the holidays themselves, so book a car crossing before you travel. Walk-ons never need a reservation.
Where should we stay for New Year’s?
A hotel with a restaurant, because the towns close early on a holiday: the Harbor View in Edgartown, across from the lit lighthouse, or the Mansion House in Vineyard Haven with its indoor pool. Rooms run around $200 that cost $600 in August.
What is the island like the week after New Year’s?
The emptiest of the year. Holiday visitors leave on the Sunday boat, some restaurants begin their own vacations (Alchemy closed January 1 to February 11 in 2026), the ferry runs half empty, and the beaches, trails and resident-only shores belong to whoever stayed.
