More than 40 art galleries scattered across six towns, anchored by a creative tradition stretching back over a century. From Thomas Hart Benton's Chilmark studio to the whimsical dancing sculptures in West Tisbury, the island's art scene rivals destinations many times its size. Nearly all galleries are free to enter, predominantly seasonal (Memorial Day–Columbus Day), and clustered in walkable districts.

1050 State Road, West Tisbury. Among MV's most photographed spots. Tom Maley (1911–2000) created the larger-than-life white dancing figures: urethane foam, fiberglass, epoxy. Gallery opened August 8, 1971. The outdoor sculpture field is free to walk through anytime, day or night. In March 2026, the MV Museum opened "Tom Maley: Dancing in the Field" retrospective.

636 Old County Road, West Tisbury. Since 1954. Oldest continuously operating gallery on MV. Restored grain barn with 7 exhibition spaces. 75+ active artists, 100+ total including historical estates.

58 Dock Street, Edgartown. An 1840 building: former sail loft, whale oil factory, boat builder's shop. Named after "Old Sculpin" Manuel Swartz Roberts who built 200 catboats here. The building inspired Quint's shack in Jaws; production designer Joe Alves used it as the primary design reference. Featured in Jaws 50th anniversary celebrations (2025).

Thomas Hart Benton (1889–1975): America's most celebrated Regionalist painter. First visited 1920, bought Chilmark cottage 1928, returned 50+ summers. Ashes buried on the family's MV property. Works at Granary Gallery year-round.
Alfred Eisenstaedt (1898–1995): Life Magazine legend. Every August for 50+ years at Menemsha Inn. First public exhibition at Granary Gallery 1986. 100+ prints available.
