Veterans Memorial Park, Vineyard Haven

Veterans Memorial Park, Vineyard Haven

Veterans Memorial Park in Vineyard Haven hosts concerts, community events, and offers peaceful Martha's Vineyard harbor views year-round.

Veterans Memorial Park is located at 10 Causeway Road in Vineyard Haven — behind Cumberland Farms, off Lagoon Pond Road near Lagoon Pond. This is an athletic and recreational park, not to be confused with Owen Park on the harbor which hosts the summer band concerts.

What the Park Contains

The park covers approximately 9 acres with amenities including: a soccer field, two baseball fields (one lighted), a volleyball court, a lighted basketball court, a multi-purpose field, playground equipment, picnic tables, restrooms, and free parking. It is a living memorial to veterans who died in wars — the American Legion veterans decided "a park area of playing fields and playgrounds was more suitable than bronze and granite as a memorial."

History

Built by American Legion Post 257 (George W. Goethals Post) on land that was formerly a tidal marsh called "Cat Hollow." 60,000 cubic yards of earth were brought in to fill the marsh, and construction took 12 years. In 1964, Tisbury selectmen received the deed along with $6,000 for improvements. The park underwent a $500,000 renovation with a grand reopening circa 2015.

Events

The park has hosted the Beach Road Weekend music festival (2023 featured Mumford & Sons, Bon Iver, Leon Bridges). Standard use is recreational and athletic — youth soccer, Little League, community sports.

Note on Band Concerts

The Vineyard Haven Band summer concerts are held at the Owen Park bandstand on the harbor, not at Veterans Memorial Park. See our Owen Park guide for concert schedule details.
