For one long weekend every December, Edgartown decides that the off-season is a rumor. The 45th annual Christmas in Edgartown runs Thursday, December 10 through Sunday, December 13, 2026: the lighthouse gets lit, Santa arrives by ferry, a parade rolls down Main Street, and the whaling captains' houses put candles in every window. It is the island's biggest winter weekend by far, it is free to attend, and it is the single best argument for visiting Martha's Vineyard after the crowds go home.
This guide covers how the weekend usually unfolds, how to get here on the winter ferry schedule, and who is actually open in mid-December. One honest note up front: the Board of Trade has confirmed the 2026 dates but has not yet published event times, so the schedule below reflects how recent editions have run. The other fixture worth knowing about is the Teddy Bear Suite, a walk-through holiday room that raises money for the Martha's Vineyard Boys and Girls Club; the tradition has raised over $450,000 to date. The venue moves from year to year (it has been hosted at several in-town hotels), and entry was ticketed in 2025, so check the festival site for this year's home before you promise it to the kids.
December travel is refreshingly simple, with one big catch. The Steamship Authority runs Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven only in winter; the Oak Bluffs terminal closed for the season on October 22. The winter schedule runs 14 departures a day each way, roughly every 75 minutes, first boat 6:00 AM and last boat back to the mainland at 9:30 PM from Vineyard Haven. In past years Hy-Line has run a special one-day Hyannis cruise for the festival Saturday; nothing is announced for 2026 yet. On the island, the car-free playbook works fine: Edgartown's festival footprint is compact and walkable, off-season parking is easy by summer standards (time limits still enforced), and the Chappy Ferry runs year-round (winter hours 6:30 AM to 10 PM), which is exactly how Santa commutes.

Mid-December is when Edgartown's year-round hotels earn their keep, at some of the lowest rates of the year. The Harbor View Hotel stays open all winter and leans into the festival weekend. Check rates. The Charlotte Inn is the other year-round anchor: fireside, antiques, deeply quiet. More survives the off-season in Edgartown than first-timers expect. The Newes from America pours by the fire daily, year-round. The Square Rigger and Rockfish run through the winter (Rockfish takes Mondays and Tuesdays off), and Lucky Hank's, the Edgartown Diner and The Grill on Main round out the reliable list. Christmas in Edgartown is the island at its most local: the same streets that hold summer's crowds, handed back to the people who stay, and lit like they mean it. Come Friday evening, stand near the lighthouse at 6 PM, and you will understand why islanders call this the best weekend of the winter.
