Martha's Vineyard in October: Fall Foliage, the Derby and Off-Season Travel (2026)

Martha's Vineyard in October: Fall Foliage, the Derby and Off-Season Travel (2026)

Martha's Vineyard in October: fall foliage timing, the 81st Striped Bass Derby, 30+ open restaurants, hotel deals at 40-60% off, and what October makes easy.

October on Martha's Vineyard is a different trip from summer. You can get a table without a long wait, ferry car reservations are much easier to find, parking is easy, and Lucy Vincent and Lambert's Cove, residents-only all summer, are open to everyone. Hotel rates typically run 40–60% below peak. Days sit in the low-to-mid 60s, the 81st annual Derby is in full swing, and the leaves are turning.

What October is like

  • The summer population of 100,000+ drops to roughly 20,000 year-round residents, so the roads are quiet, restaurants take walk-ins and ferry reservations are easy.
  • Average highs are 64°F and lows 48°F, with about 7 hours of sunshine a day. The ocean is around 61°F early in the month.
  • Hotel rates typically run 40–60% below peak. Ashley Inn $305–375 mid-month, about $205–250 after Halloween (published 2026 rates). Winnetu has run 35% off midweek suite stays into mid-October in past years, so ask what this year's offer is. There's no weekend ferry surcharge either, which saves $82 round trip compared with summer.
  • Lucy Vincent and Lambert's Cove, restricted all summer, open to everyone from mid-September (Lucy Vincent from September 16, Lambert's Cove after September 15)

Fall foliage on the Vineyard

The island in fallPhoto by MV Vacation

The Vineyard’s color comes late and lingers into November, and it runs more to russet and gold than the bright reds inland.

The color here comes in patches, with the ocean behind it. It peaks in late October and early November, 2–3 weeks later than mainland MA because the ocean keeps the island warm.

What to look for

  • Beetlebung trees (tupelo): deep scarlet, first to change (early-mid October). Some trees 650+ years old. Best at Beetlebung Corner, Chilmark
  • Red maples: vivid red/orange/yellow in wetlands. Best along Middle Road, Chilmark
  • Sassafras: speckled yellow/orange, everywhere on island
  • Sumac: deep crimson along roadsides, especially on Old County Road near Nat's Farm
  • Sugar maples aren't native to the island, and the white oaks (70% of the canopy) turn brown and russet

  6. Felix Neck (Edgartown): fall color reflected in salt marsh + peak fall bird migration
  7. Correllus State Forest: 5,000 acres of trails through oak and pitch pine, with quieter color

What's open in October

A quiet side street in low autumn sun. The year-round towns, Vineyard Haven and Edgartown, keep their restaurants and shops going while the summer places shut for the season.

More than 30 restaurants, 12+ hotels and every trail stay open. Some of them:

The coffee shops switch to the fall board by the end of September: pumpkin spice, caramel apple, toasted marshmallow, and a skeleton inviting you to come warm your bones.

Garden centers turn into autumn shops for a few weeks: the She Shed at Second Nature at Eden on State Road in Vineyard Haven had sunflowers, pumpkins, wreaths and local honey on the shelves in early September and stays open into mid-October before closing for the season. In Oak Bluffs, Jardin Mahoney at the corner of Edgartown–Vineyard Haven Road and County Road stays open every day, 9 to 4, with trees and shrubs in the yard, pallets of compost and mulch, and a greenhouse full of houseplants for the months ahead. Islanders plant trees and shrubs in the fall, while the ground is still warm and the rain is back, so the roots settle in before the first frost.

Getting here in October

The SSA ferry runs year-round to Vineyard Haven. SSA boats keep landing at Oak Bluffs four times a day through October 22 (arrivals 10:15 AM, 12:45, 3:15 and 5:45 PM). Every other crossing arrives at Vineyard Haven, and from October 23 the winter timetable runs roughly every 75 minutes (6:00 a.m.–9:45 p.m. daily). Foot passengers can still land in Oak Bluffs on the Island Queen through October 12 and on the Hy-Line from Hyannis through October 25; Seastreak from New Bedford runs to October 12 but has used Vineyard Haven since September 20. Car reservations are much easier to get than in summer. All ferry options, and the full seasonal wind-down in what changes after Labor Day.

The VTA bus ran its full schedule through about Oct 3 and a reduced one after that. A car is more useful in October: there's much less traffic than in summer, parking is easy, and the ferry has no summer weekend surcharge. Car-free guide.

What to pack

October · layer upPhoto by MV Vacation

October swings from warm afternoons to cold nights. Bring layers, a windbreaker for the ferry deck, and something warm for a Derby dawn on the beach.

Bring layers: mornings are around 48°F, afternoons 64°F, and it cools fast at sunset (6:25 PM in early October, 5:42 PM in late October). A waterproof jacket is worth packing, along with a fleece or sweater, a warm hat, sturdy hiking shoes and sunscreen.

Photography

October light is softer and lower. The Aquinnah Cliffs have an ocean sunset all year, and Edgartown Lighthouse is the sunrise spot. Menemsha no longer has a true sun-over-water sunset after early September; Aquinnah or West Chop work better then. The Mytoi ponds reflect the foliage, and Cedar Tree Neck puts beetlebungs in front of the ocean.

For accommodation: where to stay. For dining: restaurant guide. And the full off-season guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does fall foliage peak on Martha’s Vineyard?

Late October into early November, two to three weeks behind the mainland. The ocean holds the island warm and slows the color down. Middle Road in Chilmark, Menemsha Hills, Polly Hill Arboretum and the state forest paths are the reliable spots.

What closes on Columbus Day weekend?

The Island Queen and SeaStreak passenger ferries, the Polly Hill visitor center and the Trustees gatehouses take their last day on October 12, 2026, and the Flying Horses usually stop the same weekend. The Steamship Authority keeps sailing all year; its fall schedule runs through October 22 and the winter schedule, Vineyard Haven only, starts October 23.

Is the Derby still on in October?

Yes. The 81st Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby runs September 13 to October 17, 2026. The weigh-in at Derby headquarters on Dock Street in Edgartown is open to watch every day, 8 to 10 in the morning and 7 to 9 at night, free.

Can I still swim in October?

The ocean drops to about 60–63°F by October, which is wetsuit water for most people, and the lifeguards are gone after Labor Day. On the other hand, the resident-only beaches, Lucy Vincent and Lambert’s Cove, are open to everyone from mid-September.

Do I need a car in October?

Less than in summer. The VTA runs all year and is fare-free through June 30, 2027, though the fall timetable from October 4 has fewer runs and earlier last buses. Up-island, a car still makes the day much easier.
