Visiting Aquinnah Respectfully: The Wampanoag Homeland at the Island's Edge (2026)
The Gay Head Cliffs are sacred Wampanoag land, not just a viewpoint. What visitors are welcome to in Aquinnah, what the rules protect, and how to be a good guest.

MV fishing guide: the 81st Derby, legendary shore spots, charter prices, monthly calendar, tackle shops, and beginner tips.
Martha's Vineyard offers some of the finest saltwater fishing on the Eastern Seaboard, anchored by the legendary Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby each fall. The convergence of Nantucket Sound, Vineyard Sound, and the open Atlantic draws extraordinary gamefish within casting distance of shore. Here's the complete 2026 guide.
Table of contents [Show]

For five weeks every fall the whole island fishes the Derby: shore and boat, dawn and dark, everyone after the same four fish.
September 13 (12:01 AM) – October 17 (9:00 PM), 2026. Founded 1946, 3,000+ anglers, $100,000+ in prizes topped by the grand prize, a custom Derby-edition Jeep Gladiator for the 81st running. Free Kid's Day: September 20 at Oak Bluffs Ferry Wharf. Three Super Saturdays: bluefish (Sep 26), false albacore (Oct 3), bonito (Oct 10). $115,000 in scholarships awarded annually. The 2025 Derby recorded 1,825 weigh-ins across 418 albacore, 706 bluefish, and 701 bonito.
Striped bass removed from Derby since 2020 by unanimous committee vote for conservation. Derby VP Joe El-Deiry stated he "does not expect bass fishing to come back to the Derby anytime soon." Three eligible species: bluefish (min 22"), bonito (min 21"), false albacore (min 25", limit 4 weigh-ins per registration). Registration: $70 adult, $45 senior (65+), $25 junior (9–14). Weigh-ins daily at Derby HQ, Dock Street, Edgartown: 8–10 AM and 7–9 PM. Spectators are welcome at both sessions. Our Derby visitor's guide covers watching, casual entry and the awards ceremony.

The island’s shore spots are legend: Wasque, Norton Point, the Menemsha jetties. Surfcasting into the rip at first light.
Lobsterville Beach / Dogfish Bar (Aquinnah): Multiple sources call this one of the finest places to fly-fish for striped bass in the world. The north-facing beach forms a natural bowl that collects baitfish on dropping tides as Menemsha Pond flushes sand eels and silversides. At Dogfish Bar, anglers wade far out onto sand flats at low tide, standing in ankle-deep water in the middle of Vineyard Sound. Night fishing is legendary: southwest wind provides a following cast while stripers feed in skinny water, bellies sliding along sand. Access: small lot at West Basin Road (~12 spaces); Dogfish Bar is a 1.5-mile walk over gravel, the famed "Death March." Alternative: Menemsha bike ferry across the channel.
Wasque Point (Chappaquiddick): A six-knot tidal rip directly against the beach creates the island's most consistently productive spot. Guide Matt Malowski: "feasible and probable to achieve a grand slam (striped bass, bluefish, bonito, and false albacore) without moving more than a few yards." Free walk/bike access since 2025 (Trustees decarbonization initiative). Vehicle: $25/carload. Outgoing tide preferred. The legendary June "Bluefish Blitz" happens here. 10 PM–5 AM restricted to fishing only.
Cape Poge Gut: A 70-yard tidal inlet at Chappaquiddick's northern tip where powerful currents funnel baitfish through a bottleneck. Fish of 50+ pounds have been taken here. At night, bioluminescence turns every strike into an explosion of light. Access demands commitment: 4–5 mile walk over soft sand each way without an OSV permit ($250/season). Incoming tide preferred.
Edgartown Lighthouse Beach: World-class fishing within walking distance of downtown. The deep tidal channel at Edgartown Harbor funnels baitfish, concentrating false albacore September–October. Walk north up North Water Street from Main Street, 10-15 minutes. Free access; the $10 MA saltwater permit still applies. The challenge: boat moorings. Hooked albies routinely wrap lines around them.
Jaws Bridge (State Beach): The narrow channel between Nantucket Sound and Sengekontacket Pond funnels baitfish, creating a natural feeding station for albies and bonito. Clear water allows sight-casting to cruising pods. Peak: mid-September to mid-October. Free access, VTA bus nearby. See our Jaws filming locations guide.
Also productive:Menemsha Jetty (fish 2 hours after tide change), Oak Bluffs Pier (scup guaranteed, ideal for kids), South Beach/Katama (3 miles Atlantic surf), Lake Tashmoo inlet (best beginner spot), Squibnocket (Chilmark residents only before 5 PM Jun–Sep, open to all after).

The Oak Bluffs jetty: half fishing spot, half front-row bench for boat traffic.

April–May: Schoolie stripers arrive mid-April, fresh from the Chesapeake with sea lice attached. South shore first (Wasque, Chappaquiddick). Larger fish follow in May. Bluefish arrive first week of May (7–12 lb class). Squid migration provides excellent bait.
June–July: Peak striped bass, big fish on light tackle island-wide. Bonito scouts may appear mid-June but settle in reliably by late July. False albacore do NOT arrive until late August. Don't plan a June trip targeting albies. Bluefish peak mid-May through mid-June at Wasque.
August: Bonito peak. False albacore arrive last week. Offshore bluefin tuna (50–800+ lbs) 30–60 miles south around Tuna Ridge. Bluefish blitzes inshore along Gay Head shoals and Chappaquiddick.
September–October: THE CROWN JEWEL. Derby launches Sep 13. All four major species present simultaneously. Sand eels and silversides thick. Blitzes, schools crashing bait with birds diving, reach peak frequency. Historic Derby hotspots: Wasque (bluefish king), Lobsterville (bonito), Devil's Bridge (big fish by boat), West Chop (albies), Squibnocket (surf).
November–December: Tautog peaks on wrecks and rockpiles. Late-season stripers can be the largest: big cows on their final southward push. Salt ponds hold holdover fish. The diehards' domain: cold, windy, rewarding.

No gear, no spot, no problem. A half-day charter out of Menemsha puts you on fish with someone who knows the water.
MV Skipper (Oak Bluffs Harbor, Slip 74): America's longest-running party boat since 1941. $100/person, 4 hours, all gear/bait/license included. Two daily trips in summer (8 AM and 1 PM). The only walk-on party boat on the island, no experience needed. (508) 693-1238.
Menemsha Charters: Tomahawk (Capt. Buddy Vanderhoop, Wampanoag, 30+ years) half-day $800, full-day $1,600, bluefin $2,250. North Shore (Capt. McDowell, 35+ years) $800/$1,600. Captain Clarke: bluefin specialist, multiple Derby wins.
Edgartown: Local Tide Charters 32' Regulator $850 or 17' flats skiff $550. Vineyard Boat Charters from $450 (budget-friendly bottom fishing).

Fly-rodders work the flats and the great ponds at dawn: stripers and false albacore on a light line.
Kismet Outfitters (204 Upper Main St, Edgartown) is the island's dedicated fly-fishing nerve center. Founded by Captain Abbie Schuster in 2016, carrying Thomas and Thomas rods, Cheeky reels, RIO lines. Shore/wading trips (with Chappaquiddick beach permits), boat trips, paddleboard fly fishing, and casting lessons. Half-day shore ~$350, half-day boat ~$500. Year-round, Mon–Sat 9–6. (774) 549-5921.
The Lobsterville/Dogfish Bar complex is fly fishing's cathedral. An 8- to 9-weight rod with intermediate sinking line is standard. Proven patterns: Clouser Minnows (olive/tan, sizes 4–6), sand eel imitations, black Deceivers (excellent at night), poppers for topwater. The technique is a slow, casually twitched retrieve with pauses; many hits come as the fly swings in the current. Italian fly-fishing clubs reportedly travel annually from Milan for multi-night sessions at Dogfish Bar.
MA Saltwater Permit: $10 (ages 16–59), free 60+. Buy online at mass.gov/recreational-saltwater-fishing-permit. Takes 2 minutes. Charter passengers are exempt (vessel's permit covers you). Valid through Dec 31, no prorating.
Surf casting basics: Fishing from shore with a long rod, no boat needed. Starter gear: 9-foot medium-heavy spinning rod, 4000–6000 size reel, 20–30 lb braid with fluorocarbon leader, a few poppers and bucktails. Total investment: ~$150–300. Multiple guides cater to beginners at ~$300 for a half-day with all gear provided.
Visit a tackle shop first: 15 minutes of local intel is the most valuable prep. Coop's Bait and Tackle (147 W. Tisbury Rd, Edgartown): since 1974, Field and Stream Top 10 shop, only Orvis dealer on island, year-round. Larry's Tackle (258 Upper Main St, Edgartown): since 1947, legendary customer service, interactive fishing spot map on website. Dick's Bait and Tackle (108 New York Ave, OB): since 1969, IGFA-certified scale, custom rod building.
Striped bass: Slot 28"–31", 1 fish/day, circle hooks mandatory with natural bait. Bluefish: 5 fish (shore/private), 7 (for-hire), increased for 2026. Bonito + false albacore: 5 fish combined, 16" minimum (new 2025 regulation, first on the East Coast). Bluefin tuna: Separate NOAA HMS Angling permit ($26 at hmspermits.noaa.gov), roughly the 27–73 inch class; vessel bag limits shift in-season, so check current NOAA retention rules before you go.
4WD Beach Permits: Trustees OSV $250/season (Cape Poge + Wasque), $380 all-island. Sold at thetrustees.org (about $250/$380). Norton Point: $90 resident / $140 non-resident through Edgartown Parks and Beaches. Piping plover closures Jun–Jul.
