Labor Day weekend on Martha’s Vineyard is the island’s last full-strength summer weekend and its first quiet one, in the same three days. The water is as warm as it gets all year, every restaurant and boat is still running, the summer workers are still behind the counters, and the calendar is full: the Artisans Festival in the Agricultural Hall, a jazz and blues weekend in Oak Bluffs, the first Friday street party in Vineyard Haven, and the last New York boat of the season tying up in Oak Bluffs on the Friday night. Then, on the Monday afternoon, the island empties on the ferries in the busiest exodus of the year, the lifeguards go home, and the best month begins. This is the weekend itself, hour by hour: what is on, which boats are running and which are on their last sailing, how to get home on Monday without losing the afternoon, and why staying until Tuesday is the best trick in the book.
Labor Day is the first Monday of September. In 2026 it fell late, on the 7th, so Massachusetts schools were back a full week before the weekend and the crowds had already thinned.
State Beach on the Sound averages about 68. Lifeguards leave every beach after Labor Day, so the weekend is the last guarded swimming of the season; South Beach’s rip currents do not know the date.
The Falmouth–Edgartown ferry and Seastreak’s New York boat end with the weekend. The Steamship’s peak timetable runs through September 10; Oak Bluffs landings drop to four a day from the 11th. The Island Queen goes to its reduced fall timetable on the 8th.
August prices hold through the weekend, then fall 25 to 40 percent: the Ashley Inn in Edgartown drops from $525 to $625 a night to $395 to $495 from September 8. Book the Sunday night; stay the Monday and Tuesday at the lower rate.
A car crossing on the Monday needs a reservation made months ago and an early arrival; walk-ons never book but the boats fill. The cure is a Tuesday sailing, when the island has already turned into September.
The weekend opens on the Friday evening with First Friday in Vineyard Haven, the monthly street party with food trucks and live music from 5 PM along Main Street and at Owen Park (September 4 in 2026, the last of the summer run before the series returns in October and December). Grace Church’s Friday lobster rolls, the island’s best $20, are served for the last time until spring. In Oak Bluffs the same evening, Seastreak’s last New York boat of the year comes in at about 6 PM, and its passengers walk straight into the MV Jazz and Blues Summerfest, which fills Union Chapel and the Strand over the three nights of the weekend with tickets from $50 to $175 a night. THE ARTISANS FESTIVAL
The Vineyard Artisans Labor Day Festival, Friday to Sunday (September 4 to 6 in 2026) at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury, its 31st year: more than a hundred island makers under the big barn. The season’s largest market and the one weekend the summer Sunday festivals move indoors to the hall.
THE BEACHES
The last guarded weekend. State Beach for calm water and the bus stop along it, South Beach for the surf with lifeguards still on the stands, the Inkwell for the Polar Bears, who swim at 7:30 every morning until Labor Day and then stop for the year. Dogs are banned on most beaches through the Monday and welcome again on the Tuesday.
THE UP-ISLAND STICKERS
Squibnocket in Chilmark is sticker-only through Labor Day, Lucy Vincent and Lambert’s Cove through September 15. Menemsha Town Beach and the Aquinnah cliffs are open to all; sunset at Menemsha is at its most crowded of the year on the Sunday.
THE JAZZ WEEKEND
The Summerfest’s Saturday and Sunday nights at Union Chapel and the Strand in Oak Bluffs. Buy ahead; the Strand is small.
THE LAST BOATS
The Pied Piper from Falmouth to Edgartown makes its last daily runs; Hy-Line’s inter-island boat to Nantucket finishes on the Monday. If a Nantucket day was on the list, it is this weekend or not at all.

Monday: getting home, or not
The Monday of Labor Day is the busiest departure day the island has. Rental leases turn over, the summer staff leave with the visitors, and the afternoon Steamship boats out of Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs carry everyone at once. If you are taking a car off, the reservation was made when the summer slots opened in February; standby has been suspended since November 2024, so there is no queue to join. Arrive early, and expect the Woods Hole lots and the Palmer Avenue shuttle to be at their fullest of the year on the far side. Walk-ons never need a reservation, but the afternoon sailings fill, so take a morning boat or plan to wait. The parking guide and the cheapest-way guide cover the lots and the passenger boats. The better answer is not to leave on Monday at all. Stay to Tuesday or Wednesday: the rooms drop the morning after the holiday, the beaches are empty by lunchtime, the water is still 67 degrees, and every restaurant that was full on Saturday has a table. The Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby begins, 35 days of fishing from every beach on the island, $70 to enter, through October 17. The Derby guide explains it from the spectator’s side.
SEPTEMBER 15 AND 16
Steamship vehicle fares drop and the weekend premium disappears on the 15th; Lambert’s Cove and Lucy Vincent open to everyone on the 16th.
SEPTEMBER 19
Tivoli Day, Oak Bluffs’ end-of-summer block party on Circuit Avenue from 10 AM, free, with the Songwriters Festival at the Strand the same weekend.
Our honest advice
Come for the weekend if the calendar is the point: the makers’ market, the jazz, the last lobster rolls at the church, the last guarded swim, the Sunday sunset crowd at Menemsha. Come the Tuesday after if the island is the point. And if you can do both, arrive on the Friday boat and leave on the Wednesday, which gets you the whole festival weekend at summer strength and two days of the September everyone who lives here waits for. Yes, at summer strength through the Sunday, and the Monday afternoon ferries are the busiest departure of the year. The week before is already quieter because Massachusetts schools reopen in late August, and the Tuesday after is September: empty beaches, lower rooms, warm water.
Are the beaches still open after Labor Day?
Every beach stays open; the lifeguards leave after the holiday, so swimming is unguarded from the Tuesday. Dogs return to most beaches, and the resident-only beaches, Lambert’s Cove and Lucy Vincent, open to everyone from September 16.
Which ferries stop running at Labor Day?
The Falmouth–Edgartown ferry and Seastreak’s New York weekend boat end with the holiday weekend. The Steamship Authority runs all year; its peak schedule ends September 10 and Oak Bluffs keeps four boats a day until October 22. The Island Queen, Hy-Line and Seastreak from New Bedford run into October.
What events are on over Labor Day weekend?
In 2026: First Friday in Vineyard Haven on the Friday, the Vineyard Artisans Labor Day Festival at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury from Friday to Sunday, and the MV Jazz and Blues Summerfest at Union Chapel and the Strand in Oak Bluffs on all three nights.
How do I avoid the Monday ferry crush?
