Martha's Vineyard is one of New England's greatest family destinations, and 2026 has been a good year to bring kids over: the Flying Horses Carousel turned 150, the VTA buses are fare-free through early October, and the Agricultural Fair has settled into its new August weekend. Here is everything we would tell a friend planning a family trip.

Felix Neck: four miles of easy trails, sensory bins in the Ed Barn and ospreys overhead.
The oldest platform carousel in the United States, built 1876. National Historic Landmark. 22 hand-carved horses with real horsehair and glass eyes. $5/ride, brass ring tradition. Open seasonally from early April into October. Summer: daily 10 AM–9 PM.

Kids ages 3–10 board a 40-foot pirate ship for 90-minute interactive cruise: face painting, treasure hunts, water cannon battles. $44/person (adults included). Tue/Wed/Thu/Sat. A TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice pick; parents regularly compare the production quality to Disney.
30+ gentle alpacas. Daily 10 AM–4 PM year-round; $8 admission May–Nov, free in the off-season. Walk and Talks 10:30 AM–2:30 PM. Seasonal Alpaca Yoga available.

Essential treats: Mad Martha's ice cream (3 locations), Murdick's Fudge Temporarily closed All three island shops have been closed since mid-August 2026 after an accident involving the operator; no reopening date announced. The fudge ships online. (through Sep 18), where kids can usually watch fudge being made on the marble table (the island shops have been temporarily closed this season; the family hopes to reopen soon, and the fudge ships from their online store meanwhile), Back Door Donuts (hot apple fritters nightly from 7 PM in season; one of USA Today's top-five doughnut shops in America).

VTA buses are free through June 30, 2027, fully accessible with ramps and priority seating. Route 13 connects OB, Edgartown, and VH every 15–20 min. SSA ferries: children under 5 ride free. MV Baby Rent (508-627-8830) delivers strollers, car seats, cribs, and beach wagons island-wide.
Stroller-friendly:Oak Bluffs is best (wide sidewalks, flat Ocean Park). State Beach bike path is fully stroller-compatible. Manuel F. Correllus State Forest has 3+ miles of paved paths.
Tick protection is non-negotiable. MV is one of the highest Lyme disease risk areas in the country (alpha-gal positive tests alone jumped from 2 in 2020 to 523 in 2024). Pack permethrin spray for clothing, DEET repellent, fine-tipped tweezers. Light-colored clothes. Full-body tick checks after every outdoor activity. Run clothes through dryer on high 20 minutes.
Also bring: pop-up beach tent (umbrellas unstable in soft sand), rash guards, reef shoes for rocky beaches, rain jackets (6–9 rainy days per month Jul/Aug), and $100–200 cash for farm stands and cash-only vendors. Skip bulky baby gear. MV Baby Rent delivers everything.
Book by January/February for peak summer. 3BR house: $4,000–12,000/week in peak season. Oak Bluffs = best for kids 6+. Edgartown = best for toddlers. Prioritize: washer/dryer, outdoor shower, A/C, beach walkability. Stock groceries on the mainland before the ferry: island prices 15–30% higher.
Martha's Vineyard Hospital (1 Hospital Rd, Oak Bluffs): 24/7 ER affiliated with Mass General. For non-emergencies, the hospital's Express Care sees patients on weekdays; call ahead. Bring all prescriptions. Limited pharmacy options since Leslie's closed in 2024. The visitor medical guide covers the walk-in clinics and the pharmacies.

MV Baby Rent (508-627-8830, mvbabyrent.com) has solved the gear problem since 1996. Delivers to all six towns: crib $145/week, pack-n-play $65, jogging stroller $125, car seat $80, beach wagon with sand wheels $80. Same-day delivery if ordered before 9 AM. Also rents blackout blinds and white noise machines ($6/day each).
Massachusetts law protects breastfeeding everywhere. Larger SSA ferries have changing tables. Owen Park Beach has permanent restrooms. State Beach has none. Carry a portable changing pad. Nap strategy: morning outing, midday nap at rental, late-afternoon activity.
Martha's Vineyard Hospital (Oak Bluffs) has a pediatrics department with board-certified pediatricians and 24/7 Emergency Department handling pediatric emergencies. Mass General Brigham affiliated. MedFlight to Boston for complex cases.
Ryan Family Amusements (19 Circuit Ave, OB): 75+ arcade games, VR, racing sims. Unlimited 90-min pass $25.95. Open until 10–11 PM in summer. Steere the Course mini golf (the former Cove) open until 10 PM. Night fishing from Menemsha jetties. Island Spirit Glow Tours.

Yes. MV is exceptionally safe. VTA buses connect all towns (no age restriction, currently free). 35+ miles of bike paths. Down-island towns walkable and well-lit evenings. Verizon has strongest coverage; all carriers congest in peak summer, so download offline maps.

Joshua Slocum, first to sail alone around the world, spent his last years farming in West Tisbury and vanished from Vineyard Haven harbor in November 1909.
