Pet-Friendly Martha's Vineyard: Dog Beaches, Restaurants & Lodging Guide (2026)

Pet-Friendly Martha's Vineyard: Dog Beaches, Restaurants & Lodging Guide (2026)

MV with dogs: free ferry passage, beach rules by town, 25+ dog-friendly restaurants, pet hotels, tick prevention, and vet care.

Martha's Vineyard is one of New England's most dog-friendly islands, but navigating its patchwork of town-by-town rules requires planning. Every ferry carries pets free, dozens of restaurants welcome dogs on patios, and hundreds of acres of conservation land are open to leashed pups. Yet some popular beaches ban dogs entirely, tick-borne disease risk is among the worst in America, and there's no 24-hour emergency vet on-island.

Every Ferry Welcomes Pets Free

FerryPetsFeeNotes
SSA (Woods Hole)FreeYear-round. Dogs can stay in car or come up on leash
Hy-Line (Hyannis)FreeSeasonal. Inter-island to Nantucket too
Seastreak (New Bedford)FreeNB route only. NOT allowed on NYC/NJ route
Island Queen (Falmouth)FreeSeasonal. Leash or crate

Dog-Friendly Beaches by Town

Most important rule: Most beaches restrict/ban dogs during swimming season (~May 15–Sep 15). Off-season visits are far easier for dog owners.

Best Beaches for Dogs

  • Lambert's Cove Beach (West Tisbury) — off-leash before 10 AM in summer. $5 dog permit. Unrestricted off-season. Best overall option
  • Lobsterville Beach (Aquinnah) — on-leash year-round, no restrictions. Most reliable option
  • Fuller St / Lighthouse Beach (Edgartown) — on-leash year-round
  • Oak Bluffs Town Beach — before 8 AM / after 5 PM in summer. Anytime off-season

Dogs BANNED

  • South Beach (Katama)banned at ALL times, year-round
  • ALL Vineyard Haven beaches — banned year-round (strictest town). But VH has the island's only fenced dog park (John G. Rogers Memorial, Holmes Hole Rd)
  • State Beach — banned April 1–August 31 entirely
  • Menemsha Beach — banned year-round
  • Long Point Wildlife Refuge — banned year-round

Tick Prevention: Critical for Dogs

Tick-borne disease rates are 11x the state average. 55+ deer per square mile. Three species: deer ticks, dog ticks, lone star ticks (uniquely aggressive — pursues hosts across open ground).

MV vets recommend "doubling up": oral preventative (NexGard/Simparica Trio monthly OR Bravecto every 3 months) PLUS Seresto collar (8-month repellent). Oral meds kill ticks after bite but don't repel; collars add repellent barrier.

Lyme vaccine: strongly recommended. Two doses 2–4 weeks apart + annual booster. Start 4–6 weeks before your trip. No vaccines exist for anaplasmosis or babesiosis.

Full-body tick check after every outdoor activity — ears, between toes, groin, armpits, under collar.

Veterinary Care — Plan Ahead

No 24-hour emergency vet on MV. Two clinics: Vineyard Veterinary Clinic (Edgartown, 508-627-5292) and Animal Health Care Associates (West Tisbury, 508-693-6515, also boarding/grooming). VetTriage telehealth (urgentvetcaremv.com) operates 24/7. After-hours emergencies: Patriot Party Boats (508-566-7802) provides 24/7 water taxi to mainland → Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists in Buzzards Bay.

Good Dog Goods (79 Circuit Ave, OB) — island's pet store with food, treats, toys. SBS (VH) stocks feed and supplies.

Best Dog Trails

  • Manuel Correllus State Forest — 5,300 acres, 14+ miles trails, leashed dogs year-round, shaded, free
  • Menemsha Hills — 3 miles, ocean views, beach access, leashed, free
  • Cedar Tree Neck — 2 miles, forest to rocky beach, leashed, free
  • All Sheriff's Meadow Foundation properties (22+ preserves) welcome leashed dogs
  • NOT allowed: Felix Neck, Long Point, Polly Hill Arboretum, Mytoi

TrailsMV app includes pet policies for every trail.

Practical Tips

  • VTA buses allow dogs (mention when boarding; allergy objections may delay)
  • Bring water — many trails have no water sources
  • Rinse dogs after saltwater. Check paws for oyster shells
  • Hunting season (Oct–Dec): wear bright colors on trails. No hunting on Sundays
  • West Tisbury Farmers Market and Agricultural Fair: dogs NOT allowed
  • Best time for dogs: mid-September–May — nearly every beach opens, fewer restrictions, cooler temps

⛴️ Island Tip of the Day — Ferry

Seastreak from New Bedford ($49 one-way, 50 min) completely bypasses Cape Cod bridge traffic — ideal for summer weekends when the Bourne and Sagamore bridges are jammed.
