Nor'easter week on the water. The National Weather Service has a Gale Warning on Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound from Wednesday morning through Thursday evening, and the forecast holds northeast winds of 22 to 28 mph with gusts near 40 mph into Saturday, with rain likely Friday and Saturday.
The Steamship Authority says Woods Hole sailings may be canceled, with Oak Bluffs service the most likely to be cut, and is waiving change and cancellation fees for travel on Thursday, September 24 and Friday, September 25. If you are coming or going this week, check the Steamship site before you leave for the boat, and give yourself an extra day if the trip cannot move.
Update, Thursday, September 24: the Steamship Authority now expects the storm to affect service through Sunday, September 27, and has extended the fee waiver to travel booked for any day from Thursday through Sunday. Every Oak Bluffs sailing on today's board is listed as diverted to Vineyard Haven, so if your ticket says Oak Bluffs, head for the Vineyard Haven terminal and give yourself extra time. Separately, and not because of the storm, vehicle reservations on the Woods Hole route are closed for Monday through Wednesday, September 28 to 30, while the Authority reshuffles its boats; bookings reopen day by day, so keep checking if you need one of those days.
