Take a walk around Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard while experiencing the sunset. Because it is a working, year-round town, there are parts of Vineyard Haven that you will see are part of “everyday life” from the local post offices and grocery stores, to the eclectic second hand stores that are sprinkled in between. What makes Vineyard Haven the town it is, is the diversity not only in offerings for the travelers, but the diversity within the business community. Brazilian-owned, Black-owned and women-owned businesses sit within a few steps of each other here, and that mix is a big part of why so many people call Vineyard Haven home.

Vineyard Haven harbor opens to the north, between West Chop and East Chop, so from the harbor beaches you mostly watch the sunset sky turn color over the water rather than the sun itself going down. For the sun meeting the water over Vineyard Sound, with the Elizabeth Islands on the horizon, head out to West Chop.
Owen Park Beach is the easy in-town spot, a small beach with a public dock that looks out across the harbor as the sky goes pink behind the town. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to claim a spot on the dock. In summer, sunset falls between 8:00 and 8:30 PM; in winter, it's as early as 4:15 PM.
This sunset walk takes you through the everyday side of Vineyard Haven: past the post office, Cronig's Market (the island's go-to grocery store), and the secondhand shops that locals love. As the golden light hits the harbor, even the ordinary streets look good. The walk loops back through Main Street, where some restaurants offer outdoor seating with water views, a good way to end the evening.
