Everything in West Tisbury eventually happens here: the market, the artisans, the suppers, the town arguments, under the scalloped trim of an 1859 hall.

West Tisbury is the rural heart of Martha's Vineyard: a town defined by forests, farmland, conservation trails, and one of the island's most beloved beaches. It's quieter than the down-island towns, but culturally rich, nature-focused, and historically significant. Originally settled in 1669 and incorporated in 1892, West Tisbury is where the island's agricultural traditions remain strongest.

History

West Tisbury's early history centers on farming, mills, and close-knit settlement patterns. For more than three centuries, agriculture shaped the landscape, from sheep farms and cranberry bogs to today's conservation land. The town still carries the atmosphere of an older Vineyard, with winding roads, stone walls, and historic properties preserved across its hills and forests.

The Farmers Market

The town's identity is anchored in farming. The West Tisbury Farmers Market, held at the Agricultural Hall, is the island's largest and oldest market, running Wednesdays and Saturdays from June through October. Local vegetables, flowers, honey, baked goods, and prepared foods reflect the island's artisan culture.

Lambert's Cove Beach

Lambert's Cove Beach is West Tisbury's crown jewel: soft white sand, warm water, and one of the prettiest sunset spots on the Vineyard. Access requires a resident pass in peak season, but many rentals include one.

The Trails

West Tisbury has some of the island's best trail systems, managed by the Sheriff's Meadow Foundation, the MV Land Bank, and the Trustees of Reservations.
