Every confirmed event on Martha's Vineyard in 2026: AG Fair, Grand Illumination, Derby, July 4th, film festivals, and more.
Martha's Vineyard packs more authentic events into a single summer than most destinations manage in a decade. The oldest continuous agricultural fair in the country, one of the East Coast's most prestigious fishing derbies, and a lantern-lit Grand Illumination dating to 1869, all on an island of roughly 20,000 year-round residents. Every date below has been cross-checked against the organizers themselves and primary island sources. Where an event's exact time or date wasn't yet published by its organizer, we say so plainly rather than guess.
✓ Facts verified August 2026Dates, hours and prices checked against official sources when published. Things change on island time. Always confirm with the operator before you travel.

The Major Events in Detail
July 4th on Martha's Vineyard
Edgartown · the Fourth of July paradePhoto by MV Vacation
The Edgartown parade is the island’s classic Fourth: flags down Main Street in the late afternoon, fireworks over the harbor after dark.
The Fourth is the island's most festive day, split between two celebrations six miles apart. The Oak Bluffs Children's Parade kicks off at 9 AM, with kids in red, white, and blue marching through the historic Campground, one of the most photographed mornings on the island's calendar. In Edgartown, the main parade steps off at 5 PM and winds through downtown before fireworks light up the harbor at dusk, around 9 PM. It's one of the few days when island-hoppers plan deliberately between towns: start in Oak Bluffs, then make your way to Edgartown for the evening.
48th Possible Dreams Auction (August 8)
Raising money for island charities since 1978, the Possible Dreams Auction returns for its 48th year on Saturday, August 8, from 3 to 6:30 PM. Hosted by Seth Meyers, it takes place at Allen Farm in Chilmark, a working sheep farm with sweeping views of the Vineyard Sound. Guests bid on once-in-a-lifetime experiences: walk-on roles, dinners with authors, and time with island icons. Proceeds benefit Martha's Vineyard Community Services, which supports mental health, recovery, and social services for year-round islanders. Tickets are limited and typically require early purchase.
164th Agricultural Fair (August 13–16)
The Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Society Fair is the oldest continuous agricultural fair in the United States, held at the West Tisbury Fairgrounds. The 2026 edition (the 164th) runs Thursday through Sunday, August 13–16, and marks the fair's permanent move to the second full weekend of August. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children (5–12), seniors (62+), and veterans; kids under four are free, and parking is $10.
Four days bring livestock shows, vegetable and baking competitions, a carnival midway, live music every evening, ox pulls, and the famous horse show on the final Sunday. The food is pure New England: fried dough, lobster rolls, corn on the cob, and local farm produce. The fair draws tens of thousands over four days, so book ferries and lodging well ahead.
Grand Illumination Night (August 19)
Oak Bluffs · Illumination NightPhoto by MV Vacation
One evening in August the gingerbread cottages around the Tabernacle hang hundreds of paper lanterns and light them at once. Arrive early; the campground fills.
Grand Illumination Night is the most striking sight on the island's calendar. Dating to 1869, it takes place in the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association Campground in Oak Bluffs, a National Historic Landmark district of 300+ gingerbread cottages around a central Tabernacle. The evening opens at 7 PM with a Community Sing and the Vineyard Haven Band inside the Tabernacle; afterward, thousands of Japanese paper lanterns strung between the Victorian cottages are lit in domino-like succession until the whole neighborhood glows.
Arrive early (by 5:30 to 6 PM) to secure a spot. There's no admission charge, but the crowds are enormous and parking is extremely limited, so plan to walk or take the shuttle from Oak Bluffs town center. If weather forces a postponement, the rain date is the following evening; confirm it on the MVCMA site before you go.
81st Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby (September 13 – October 17)
Menemsha · the working harborPhoto by MV Vacation
For five weeks every fall the whole island fishes the Derby: the weigh-ins run twice a day, morning and evening, and everyone has a stake in it.
One of the most prestigious fishing tournaments on the East Coast, the Derby runs 35 consecutive days and nights from Sunday, September 13 through Saturday, October 17. Entry is $70 for adults, $45 for seniors, and $25 for juniors. Anglers target three species from both shore and boat: bluefish, bonito, and false albacore (striped bass have been excluded since 2020). The weigh station on Dock Street in Edgartown opens twice daily, 8–10 AM and 7–9 PM. Watching is free and open to everyone; our Derby visitor's guide covers the weigh-ins, shore viewing spots and awards day. The awards ceremony follows on Sunday, October 18, at Farm Neck Golf Club.
45th Christmas in Edgartown (December 10–13)
The island's premier winter event transforms historic Edgartown into a holiday village for four days, December 10–13. The 45th annual celebration includes the Edgartown Holiday Stroll, live caroling, horse-drawn carriage rides, and holiday market vendors along Main and Water Streets. The Lighthouse Lighting takes place Friday around 6 PM, with the crowd gathering from 5:30 at Memorial Wharf, and the parade steps off Saturday morning. Between the historic architecture, harbor views, and holiday lights, it's one of the most atmospheric winter weekends in New England.
What Changed for 2026
A few things are genuinely different this year, and a few earlier listings needed correcting:
The Ag Fair moved to Aug 13–16, its new permanent home on the second full weekend of August. Check that any lodging booked around the fair reflects these dates.
Possible Dreams is at Allen Farm, Chilmark: a return to an intimate, working-farm setting with ocean views.
Chilmark Road Race is Saturday, Aug 8 at 10:30 AM. An earlier "Aug 12" listing was a weekday error; the race is always the second Saturday.
Built on Stilts is at Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs, not up-island, and 2026 is its 30th season.
MV Documentary Week runs six nights through Aug 1, not four.
Planning Your Visit Around the 2026 Calendar
A few patterns help structure a trip. Spring is dominated by film festivals and artisan markets at off-peak prices. Peak summer stacks the island's biggest events back-to-back: July 4th, the Ag Fair, Grand Illumination, the African American Film Festival, and Possible Dreams all fall within six weeks. September is increasingly considered the island's best month: the Derby begins, crowds thin, and the beaches stay open. Fall brings foliage and quiet roads through the tail end of Derby season, and December delivers Christmas in Edgartown as the winter centerpiece.
Dates and times above were verified against organizers and primary island sources. A handful of community events depend on organizers publishing their 2026 details closer to the date; where that's the case, we've noted "time to be confirmed" rather than guess. Always double-check the specifics with the organizer before building a trip around a single event.
Dates shift; our live calendar does not. The always-current, verified version of everything below lives on our events page, with countdowns to the next headliners.

Your insider guide to Martha's Vineyard: beaches, dining, events, and island living. We share local knowledge to help you plan the perfect Vineyard getaway.
On August 19, 1991, Hurricane Bob hit Martha's Vineyard at the height of the season: 98 mph winds, 84 boats wrecked in Edgartown Harbor alone, a sloop in the Harborside Inn pool, and a false autumn by Labor Day. The story of the storm, told through an original Vineyard Gazette storm edition we found in an island thrift shop.
Fall 2026 on Martha's Vineyard: the September 10 and October 12 deadlines, beaches that open to everyone September 16, the Derby, scalloping by town, foliage timing and honest closing dates.
Thinking about a September or October visit? Good call. A friendly heads-up on what shifts after Labor Day 2026: the ferry switch to Vineyard Haven, each boat's last day, what stays open through Columbus Day, and how far room rates fall.
The 81st Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby runs September 13 – October 17, 2026, and you don't need a rod to enjoy it. Free twice-daily weigh-ins on Dock Street, what it costs to enter, where to watch from shore, and the key-and-lock drawing where somebody wins a boat.
You can bring a rental truck to the Vineyard, but only on the Steamship Authority boat, and the booking works differently than it does for a car. What the trucks really measure, what the ferry charges in 2026, and how to reserve space.
Inside Edgartown's 4th of July: the Main Street parade with fifes, floats, classic cars and Camp Jabberwocky, then fireworks over the harbor, with photos, video and tips for doing the day right.
