Running Route: Franklin Street to West Chop
This scenic 3-mile out-and-back running route starts on Franklin Street in Vineyard Haven and heads north along Main Street toward West Chop. The terrain is mostly flat with a gentle uphill grade as you approach the West Chop neighborhood, making it suitable for runners of all levels.
Along the way, you'll pass Vineyard Haven Harbor on your right, with views of sailboats and the occasional Steamship Authority ferry crossing Vineyard Sound. The route takes you past stately sea captain's homes dating back to the 1800s, many with classic New England cedar shingles weathered silver-gray by the salt air.
The turnaround point at West Chop features the West Chop Lighthouse, built in 1891 and still active today. On clear days, you can see across to Woods Hole on Cape Cod. The lighthouse grounds make an ideal spot to catch your breath and stretch before heading back.
Best Times and Practical Tips
Early morning runs offer the coolest temperatures in summer and the lightest traffic year-round. The sidewalk along Main Street ends after the commercial district, so you'll be running on the road shoulder. Stay alert for cars. Bring water in summer; there are no public fountains along this route. For more island running options, the bike paths also make excellent car-free running paths.
