Martha's Vineyard sits just 7 miles off the Cape Cod coast — and yes, you can visit for just a day. From Boston, a well-planned day trip delivers 6 to 12 hours on the island for as little as $100 per person. From New York City, flying is the only realistic same-day option at $260–$600 round-trip.
From Boston: Three Ways to Reach Woods Hole
Driving (Best Option)
I-93 South → MA-3 South → US-6 West → MA-28 South. 1 hour 30 minutes without traffic, up to 3 hours on peak summer weekends. Leave by 5:00 AM to catch the 7:00 AM ferry. No parking at the terminal — use the Palmer Avenue lot (286 Palmer Ave, Falmouth) at $25/day during peak season. Free shuttles every 15–20 minutes. Parking hotline: (508) 457-7275.
Peter Pan Bus
South Station (700 Atlantic Ave, Boston) → Woods Hole ferry dock. First departure 8:00 AM, arriving ~9:45 AM. Tickets $25–$33 one-way (book 7–10 days ahead at peterpanbus.com). Catch: last return from Woods Hole is 4:45 PM, giving you only ~5 hours on-island.
Cape Flyer Train
Boston South Station → Hyannis. Weekends only, Memorial Day–Labor Day. $22 one-way. Departs 8:05 AM, arrives Hyannis 10:35 AM. Transfer to Hy-Line ferry ($39 one-way, 1 hour). Won't reach island until noon — only 4 hours of island time. Not recommended for day trips.
The Steamship Authority Ferry
Peak summer schedule (June 19–Sep 10, 2026): departures every 30–60 minutes starting 6:00 AM. Crossing: 45 minutes. Walk-on: $11 one-way / $22 round-trip. Children (5–12) $5.75. Bikes $5.25. No reservation needed for foot passengers — arrive 30 minutes early on busy weekends.
Last return ferry from MV: 9:30 PM to Woods Hole. New $32 million Woods Hole terminal completing spring 2026.
Alternative: Seastreak from New Bedford
49 State Pier, New Bedford. April 16–Oct 12, 2026. Same-day round-trip: just $55. 50-minute crossing. 8:45 AM departure → 9:35 AM arrival. 5:30 PM return. Nearly 8 hours on-island — possibly the best day-trip value available.
What to Do with 6–8 Hours
Focus on the "down-island" triangle: Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown.
Walk off the ferry to Main Street. Coffee at Black Dog Bakery. Browse independent shops. Stroll to Owen Park Beach for harbor views.
Late Morning: Oak Bluffs (2–2.5 hours)
VTA bus (10–15 min, free). Flying Horses Carousel ($3.50/ride, 10 AM–10 PM). Walk through the Gingerbread Cottages (free). Lunch on Circuit Avenue ($20–$40). Inkwell Beach for a swim.
Afternoon: Edgartown (2–3 hours)
VTA bus or bike 6 miles on the State Beach bike path. Walk North Water Street (whaling captain homes). Lighthouse for harbor views.
Getting Around the Island
The VTA bus is free through at least May 2026 (summer extension under negotiation). Route #13 connects all three towns every 15–30 minutes. Bike rentals: All Star MV ($30–$90/day for comfort to e-bike, 508-693-0062) or bring your own on the ferry ($5.25 each way).
From New York City: Flying is the Only True Day Trip
No ground route supports a practical same-day visit. Every surface option involves 5–8 hours each way.
- Delta: JFK and LaGuardia → MVY, May–Sep. From $130 one-way, ~1 hour
- JetBlue: JFK → MVY, late June–Oct. From $173 one-way, 36 minutes

Realistic flying day trip: 9:00 AM departure, arrive 10:00 AM, 5–6 hours exploring, 4:00 PM return. Round-trip: $260–$600.

When to Go
Late June and September are the sweet spots — warm weather, open businesses, manageable crowds. Peak July/August swells the island from 15,000 to ~100,000 people. Pack a jacket (5–10°F cooler than mainland), comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and some cash. For restaurant tips, check our dining guide.
What NOT to Do
- Don't bring a car — $73+ ferry, impossible parking, not needed with free VTA buses
- Don't try to see the whole island — Aquinnah is 45 min from OB, too far for a day trip
- Don't miss the last ferry — summer hotels start at $300+/night
