Fishing is the outdoor activity that runs deepest on Martha’s Vineyard. Miles of coastline, productive inlets, sheltered harbors and access to Vineyard Sound and the open Atlantic give beginners and experienced anglers somewhere to go.
From quiet harbor fishing to shoreline casting and offshore charters, it is tied to the island’s working maritime culture and its seasonal rhythms.
What is running, and when
The waters around the island support a range of species that changes through the season.
The main season runs May through October, with the peak during the spring and autumn migrations. September and October draw the most people, because of the annual Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby.

Know Before You Go
Before you cast
Requirements vary by method and location. Get the appropriate Massachusetts fishing license and check the current rules before you go.
Seasonal closures and conservation guidelines apply and change. They are worth reading rather than assuming.
Follow the release guidelines where they apply. Several of these stocks are managed tightly for good reason.
Respect conservation land and posted access rules. A lot of the best shore access sits on private or protected ground.
Take fishing line home. Discarded monofilament is the single worst thing anglers leave behind here.
Observe safety warnings, especially on the ocean side and out on the jetties.
Fishing on Martha’s Vineyard is more than a recreational activity: it is a working part of the island’s maritime heritage. From shore, from a harbor or offshore by boat, it is one of the few things here that has not changed much.
