MV on a budget: hostel $40/night, free buses, $18 lobster rolls, free beaches, and how to do a full week for under $1,200.
A week on Martha's Vineyard doesn't have to cost $4,000. A couple willing to skip the car, sleep in the hostel, cook most meals, and travel in September can spend an entire week for under $1,200. The secret: understanding which expenses are fixed (the ferry) and which are wildly flexible (lodging, food, transport). With the VTA bus currently fare-free, free Trustees beach access for pedestrians since 2025, and a hostel at $40–50/night — this is the most budget-friendly moment to visit the Vineyard in years.
SSA 2026 fares: Adult $11 one-way ($22 RT). Children 5–12: $5.75 ($11.50 RT). Under 5: free. Bikes: $5.25 each way. Vehicle: $127 one-way midweek, $168 Fri–Sun peak season (May 15–Sep 14). That's $254–336 RT just for the car.
